Kane waited for hours, making sure that Eden was fast asleep. He sat on the sofa, his arms spread wide over the back. His mind was in constant thought, relaying the days, the hours. Everything was moving in much of a blur, the days had passed by in a quick precision and he knew that he could not prolong this a moment more.
He looked up at the clock hanging on the wall opposite to the couch. He sighed as soon as the clock struck three. Witching hour was upon the world now.
He stood up slowly, walking purposefully to the center of the room. He was thankful for the hardwood floor. It made it much easier clean the chalk incantations he had painstakingly drawn his before. He slip his black leather gloves into his hand as he step forward into the circle he had created. He stretched his arms wide, spreading his fingers.
"Patefacio." He said with a deep booming voice. The air around him crackled before dissolving into a swirl of almost tornado like proportions. Suddenly everything stopped, freezing and floating silently up into the air. The couch hovered above the floor. The clock was standing on its own on the hook. The lamp and the table were floating in midair, moving steadily away from each other. A large bright ring of white encompassed the floor, leaving a perfect hole big enough for Kane to fit through.
He did not move toward it, instead he crossed his arms over his chest and frowned, growing impatient. A minute ticked by and then another and just as he felt the need to explode with the building anticipation, a bright yellow mist burst forward and he sighed.
"Finally, it took you long enough, Kane." A soft male voice declared as the mist evaporated, revealing a tall, lanky olive complexioned white man. He was handsome in his own right, from his strong jaw line to his pouty lips, he was yet another example of the temptation of the dark world.
"I was busy. You don't honestly expect me to check in every other day do you?" Kane said nonchalantly, his expression bland.
"It's not me that wants your report, it's the league. They're frantic for it. You know they've been sour ever since they agreed to a truce with the White Legion until the girl decided. Everything you report they have to report to the Legion."
That made Kane pause. A small smirk lit his lips. There was no humor in it, it was quite the opposite. The league was far from trustworthy. "How long will they keep up that charade? As if they truly plan to let Eden decide?"
Abril's lips tightened into a thin line. He suddenly opened his fingers and then closed them rapidly. The portal behind him sealed in quick succession.
"You and I both know that we don't get to make the rules. Nor do we get to protest how sneaky they can be. It is what we we all are. Those of us who embrace this form of magic. It's not inherently bad or evil. It just... is."
Silence passed between them for a moment and then Kane sighed, "I have nothing to report, Abril. All the information I was given prior to meeting her still applies."
Abril frowned up, raking a hand through his dirty blonde hair. "You're telling me nothing has changed? She hasn't evolved into a prime mage?"
Kane chuckled dryly, "You expect her to suddenly transform into a supreme magic welder after only a month of finding out she possessed any powers at all? You're dreaming."
Abril sighed.
"We don't have time for this, Kane. Help her along, damn it!"
"What do you want me to do? You know I can't interfere with her decision. It's ultimately up to her to accept her powers, Abril."
Abril tsked, "Don't give me that bull crap, Kane. You're known for seduction, start seducing. Get her to accept her powers, train her a little and then persuade her to join us."
Kane frowned, "Abril, you know I can't do that. Coercion is not a part of my assignment. I'm supposed to watch over her, keep her safe and then bring her to the league on the week of her birth. Anything else is totally beyond my scope of duty and you know it."
"When did you get so noble? The Kane I know would have jumped at the chance to seduce someone into doing his will...," Abril said with a curious raise of a brow.
"If you're so worried about her well being, seducing her into matriculation may be more helpful for her than you think."
Kane grit his teeth at that. "Abril, never forget, I do as I please but this particular assignment isn't something I can have free-reign over. She's too important for me to play with."
Abril laughed, "God, Kane... Don't fall in love. That's the last thing you need right now."
Kane sputtered in surprise.
"Fall in love? Me? That's not something I had or have any intention of doing." He snapped.
Abril continued to laugh, shaking his head in amusement. "I'll take into account everything you've told me. I'll make a note of the fact that she hasn't even used her powers yet. But before I go, what color is her aura?"
Kane stiffened up, licking his suddenly dry lips. He had to stifle the urge to lie because he knew that even if he did, the league would find out eventually.
"Do you want every color or are you just fishing for the hue of one in particular?" He asked dully.
Abril tilted his head, "Come on, Kane."
Kane sighed, "Her colors are not one specific hue. They fluctuate with her mood, what she's feeling, the weather and just about anything that triggers some form of emotion. She's much more complex than anyone else I've ever read. She's not filled with dark hues but she's not bursting with bright ones either. She's truly somewhere in the middle."
"Is everything about her caught in between? Darkness and light don't mingle well together despite what anyone thinks, one always over-powers the other."
Kane ignored that statement. He couldn't argue that point but it was common knowledge that Eden had the potential to break that mold. "As of right now she's neutral. The light in her has learned to live with the darkness. There's no way for me to decipher which will eventually take control over the other. I can't tell you what path she'll willingly choose. I know that's what you were hoping for."
Abril sighed again, "This is taking more energy than it needs to. Fine. I get it, she's still at newborn level. You have a month left. Keep her safe and Kane?"
"What now?"
"Check in every once in a while. The league is so far up my ass at this point it's a wonder that I can even sit down."
Kane couldn't help the smirk that fell across his face at that comment. "Alright already. I'll check in more often."
"Good, now get me out of here."
Kane couldn't be happier to oblige. He raised a hand, spreading his fingers wide, "Prope."
The portal beamed a bright, almost blinding white and Abril began to dissolve into a cloud of yellow mist once more.
"Kane," Abril mumbled as he began to turn into nothingness before his eyes, "I was serious, you know. Don't fall in love. You can't have her. You know that."
The portal evaporated, Abril disappeared and everything that had been floating miraculously ended up back in its original spot. Kane stood there for a moment, staring into the surrounding darkness. He sighed, running a hand down the back of his head. "Don't fall in love... ," he mumbled to himself as the clock struck four. He tsked, he didn't need to be told that. He knew what his job was. He didn't need reminding. He had never failed in anything before and he didn't plan on doing so now. No matter how much he was beginning to ache for the woman. He knew better.
Falling in love with Eden was the last thing on his mind.
