"Don't you have any regular clothes?" Eden asked with disdain. If he walked around in one more suit she'd scream.
He shrugged, "This is regular to me."
"Well it is not regular here. You're in Mississippi in the middle of summer! It's June for God's sakes, wear some jeans and a regular t-shirt. You're going to fall out in this heat." She commented irritably.
Kane looked her up and down before sighing. "Will it make you stop nagging if I change clothes?"
She frowned, "I'm not nagging, and I'm only suggesting you help yourself by changing into something that won't give you heat stroke."
He grinned before moving toward the backdoor, "Alright, sweet heart. Whatever you say. Your wish is my command."
Eden watched as he disappeared inside the house. She sighed in relief when he was gone. The weeks were flying by and she had to admit that she was getting used to him being around. His presence was becoming as familiar as waking up every morning. Even his heated gaze was becoming a familiarity that she couldn't deny enjoying.
She wiped at the sweat on her brow, the sun was beating down on any and everything today with no remorse. It was an unusually hot day and that said a lot as most days were unbearably warm. She focused her attention to the task at hand. She had decided to take the day off. Her grandmother's garden was currently in dire need of attention. She had never neglected to care for the plants before but with all that had been happening lately she had not been caring for them as she should have.
She ran her fingertips over the petals of the tulips before her. The garden was filled with so much variety. On one side tomatoes and cabbage grew and on the other side flowers of various kinds bloomed in the summer sun. She remembered spending time with her grandmother out here.
Her grandmother had always sang a gentle lullaby to the flowers as she watered them. She had spent countless summers teaching Eden her sons and gently showing her how to make her own. Her soft, sweet voice always reminding her to thank the earth for giving of itself.
Eden stood, dusting her hands off on her old cut off shorts. She was dressed simply in a pair of worn cutoff jeans shorts and a purple tank top. On days like this she was thankful for her short haircut as it saved her from the extra heat.
She grabbed the watering can and walked leisurely through the plants, pouring water over them. As she got to the end of the line she paused, her eyes falling on a withered red tulip. Its stem was curved unnaturally, its leaves dry and yellowing and slightly peeling. She squatted next to it, frowning down on it.
She stared at it for a moment before sighing. She gently ran her fingers over it, enjoying the softness of its dying petals. Looking at the sad excuse for a flower made her slightly sad as well. She closed her eyes, trying to remember the song her grandmother had constantly sang to withered greenery.
After a long while her eyes popped back open. She snapped her fingers as the song hit her.
"Oh, broken one... I thought you were beautiful, so you grew and yes, you grew... nothing could stop such beauty in the limelight of the sun. So grow... grow. Crescat! Crescat!" She sang with a soft smile of remembrance.
She ran her fingers over the flower once more and just as she went to stand the ground suddenly began to rumble beneath her feet. Her eyes widened and she plopped back down onto the ground, landing on her butt in the dirt. The ground stopped rumbling abruptly and then the flower before her stood upright. Its yellow stem turned a fluorescent green before her eyes, its dry withering petals began to burst with vivid red color.
It stood out from all the rest now. It was so bright it almost hurt to look at it.
"Wow..." She said in genuine awe as she reached for it.
"Don't pick it."
She jumped, turning around so fast it was a wonder she didn't get whiplash. Kane stood behind her, his arms crossed over his chest. He was now dressed in a pair of black jeans, the material almost looked like leather, and a dark blue round-neck with tapered short sleeves. A gold chain dazzled on his neck. The gold watch on his wrist seemed brighter against his dark skin in the sun. This was the first time she had seen him dressed like a normal person. He was still just as good looking.
"That song, how do you know it?" He asked as he walked toward her, bending down to kneel beside her.
She swallowed before answering. "My grandma used to sing it all the time. Whenever she was watering the flowers she'd hum it. I just... I just happened to remember it."
He looked at the flower for a moment before smiling. He turned his attention to her, his smile never wavering. "Your first time using your powers and you do something so extremely simple. You're most definitely powerful, sweet heart. I've seen something like this before but I've never seen the earth rumble while it was happening."
She stared at him, completely lost in the bright smile he was sending her way. He had smiled at her before but never like this. She was utterly speechless. Her heart was pounding, her breath catching in her throat.
"I'm still trying to figure you out, I'm not surprised that you used white magic first." He mumbled before meeting her eyes.
He froze up entirely when he caught the look in her eyes. He was stuck in her gaze like a mouse stuck in a sticky trap. She was lulling him toward her with just a glance and he was shocked to realize that he couldn't pull himself out of it. He was a high level mage and yet he couldn't break her trance.
Her chest was rising and falling rapidly as if it were difficult for her to breathe. Her lips parted and his eyes widened. Dear, God... she was charming him. She was lulling him forward with only her eyes, she was using translucent bifocalitation. Did she even realize? He doubted it.
He was suddenly right up against her, lying half on top of her. She continued to stare up at him with large innocent eyes, eyes that were spewing silent desire. He tried once more to pull away but failed only to end up leaning toward her.
His lips grazed her own and in that moment he knew he had lost. She kissed him back with a shy puckering of the lips that swiftly turned into a passionate joining. He nearly lost all common sense when she threw her arms around his waist. She rolled on top of him, a low growl humming in her throat. All sensation except her on top of him evaporated. He was turning into mush beneath her. Her tongue invaded his mouth, caressing his own and he groaned like a wild animal, unable to contain it.
He gave in, wrapping his arms around her, one of hands sliding up her back to cup the back of her neck, bringing her closer.
"You look like you're enjoying yourselves."
Kane's eyes popped open and he pushed Eden away, gasping for air. Eden stared down at him, her lips wet and kiss swollen. Kane shot up, his hand tight on Eden's wrist as he moved in front of her.
He knew that voice.
