"Damn it, don't do that Abril." Kane snapped as he stood up, gently pulling Eden up with him. There was a look of embarrassed confusion on her face. As if she knew she had done something but not quite sure what that something was.

Kane looked her up and down, making sure that she was unhurt before turning his attention to Abril and sighing at the fact that he had not come alone.

"You two seem rather close...," Abril commented, his dirty blonde hair dancing in the slight breeze. "I see we came at the right time. I've never known anyone with the ability to completely engulf you in a trance Kane."

Kane licked his lips, still tasting her there. He kept Eden behind him, his hand locking onto hers. "I'll admit that it took me by surprise. She's a force to be reckoned with, I won't deny that."

Beside Abril stood a tall, muscular bronzed colored man with long hair in a neat braid down his back. To the right of Abril stood a familiar brown skinned woman who stared at Eden with distaste.

"So this is your assignment, Kane?" The woman mumbled dryly, "She's plain. Much too plain for you, baby."

Eden frowned up, her hand tightening around Kane's.

Kane sighed again, completely ignoring her, "Why are you here, Abril? She still has a few weeks."

"The league is impatient, you know that. They're growing desperate at this rate. Desperate enough to shorten her expected time."

"What? They can't do that."

Abril tsked, "Yes, they can. Why follow the rules when they can set their own? That's always been their way of thinking. Truly, you're not surprised?"

The look of disdain on Kane's face made Abril roll his eyes. "Besides, there is no left to deny them their claim. The other end of the bargain holder is no longer breathing. And a dead man can't object now can he?"

Eden gasped, her teeth clenching. The mention of her grandfather had her stiffen.

"We're here to tell you it's time to deliver her to the league. At least we're here to take her." Abril took a step toward then and Kane scowled.

"You're not touching her, Abril. I can promise you that." Kane snapped.

"Kane, be sensible."

"You need to be sensible. You touch her and I'll break your arm. We both know I will. If anyone is going to be taking her to the league it will be me. I was appointed her guard and her guard I will stay until the end date."

Abril sighed long and hard, running a hand across his face. "Fine, I honestly don't care, Kane. Just get her there and soon. And no more touchy feely nonsense. I already warned you not to fall in love. Snap out of it, get your head out of the clouds, do what you're supposed to be doing."

Kane stiffened, his hand loosening on hers. "I don't need you to tell me that. I know what I'm here for. I'll have her at the league's door in due time."

Abril raised a brow but smirked slightly.

"I'll take you at your word." Suddenly he turned, the people at his side following close behind him.

"See you soon." Abril mumbled as he and his entourage disappeared, vanishing with a loud thunder like clap.

Kane cursed underneath his breath, letting go of her hand and pacing in front of her like a caged lion ready to attack. Eden wrapped her arms around herself. She was completely lost... utterly dumbfounded as Abril's words echoed inside her head.

She gulped, "Are you going to take me away now?"

Her voice was shaky as she asked the question.

Kane stopped pacing and froze up, releasing a long sigh. He turned to look at her and quickly noticed the mounting panic inside her rising. He shook his head. "No. I'm in no rush to take you to the league. We'll give it a few days."

"Can you do that?"

He tsked, "My orders were based on a contract, sweet heart. It is binding. I am not just an "employee" as the human realm calls it. I am a under the protection of the laws of magic itself.  Contracts are rituals, charms, and they must be followed through. So until your birthday gets here the league has no power over how I play out my duty to protect you."

Eden nodded though a frown grew across her face. "Should I be scared?"

He stared at her for a moment, crossing his arms over his chest. "Maybe. I'm not going to sugar coat any of this. You're powerful. A little too powerful. I don't know what the league plans to use you for but I can't imagine it being for anything good or merciful."

"That wasn't the answer I was looking for, Kane." Eden whispered hoarsely.

Kane shrugged, "I don't lie, sweet heart. Lying to you, even to appease some of your worry, won't really do much good. It's better to be realistic when it comes to terms of reality."

"I'd rather not be realistic."

"You honestly don't have a choice. Get your head out of the clouds, Eden. This is happening sooner rather than later and you don't have time to dwell on how distorted reality is becoming." Kane said with a scowl, his brows knitted together with his thoughts.

Eden shivered slightly, her lashes fluttering as she looked up at Kane frown beneath her lids.

The blonde man's words replaying in her mind,"And no more touchy feely nonsense. I already warned you not to fall in love. Snap out of it..."

She gulped, her heart suddenly pounding. She knew why she was thinking of his words. The thought of Kane having feelings for her... the very idea made her while entire body ache. Her stomach was in a giant knot. She cleared her throat before sighing. She ran a hand across the back of her neck.

"I've had enough reality for one day. I just... I just want to take a nap and be normal while I still can." Eden mumbled quietly.

Kane stared at her for a moment before stepping back, nodding toward the door. "Go ahead. I suggest you do that while you still can."

Eden didn't hesitate to walk toward the door, only to be stopped by Kane grabbing her by the arm, his warm fingers sliding along her skin, grasping her tight. She gasped despite herself, her heart drumming in her ears.

Kane licked his lips before reaching out and rubbing a thumb over her bottom lip, removing the moisture there. She looked up at him, meeting his intense gaze. He stared into her eyes, frowning down on her. "Sweet dreams, sweet heart. Don't dwell on the inevitable for too long."

He released his grip on her, placing his hand in the small of her back and gently urging her inside.

She ignored the tingling his touch left behind and hurried inside.
