Eden was frustrated beyond belief. The shop had been filled to the brim all day with gossipers hoping to catch of a glimpse of her with Kane. Kane had not disappointed and had been glued to her all day. Touching her, caressing her and even going as far as to whisper in her ear.
"You're doing too much." She snapped at him as she restocked a shelf of sunflower seed packets.
He shrugged beside her, "If word spreads, which it is, that you have a man, men will stay away from you. That makes one less thing for me to have to guard you against. The less men that come around, the less you have a chance of entrapping some human into a web of aching need. To be honest with you I'd rather not have to kill anyone while I'm here."
She gasped, turning to look at him like he was out of his mind. "Kill? What? Okay, chill Mr. Wizard man, you're not killing anyone because of me."
He rose a brow, "Mr. Wizard man?"
"And there's no reason for you to worry about men coming around. I've never been all that popular with the opposite sex."
He tsked, "I doubt that, sweet heart."
"It's true, its never really bothered me. Guys have always rubbed me the wrong way."
He leaned toward her, his chest grazing her shoulder, "Do I rub you the wrong way, Eden?"
She frowned up at him, "Are you supposed to be flirting with me? I thought your job was to protect me, Kane."
He laughed, stuffing his hands into the apron around his waist.
"You're no fun at all, honey. Don't you worry, I know what my job is besides I also have to make sure your virginity stays intact."
She gasped, dropping the packets of seeds onto the floor. "How do you know that?!"
"The league knows everything. Your virginity happens to be very important when it comes down to which path you ultimately chose."
"What? How?"
"There are rituals that need to be performed and did I mention mates have to be chosen..."
"Mates have to be chose? By me, right?" She asked hopefully.
"Sorry to get your hopes up, babe. You don't get to choose. Based on your strength someone will be chosen for you but you don't have to worry about that. Someone was already chosen for you ages ago."
"But I haven't decided yet..."
Kane shrugged, "In case you do decide dark magic is where you belong. You'll spend hours going over ancient scrolls and charms and then you'll spend the night with your chosen someone and give yourself up to desires of the flesh thus bringing you into the world of dark magic."
She gulped. Her sudden bout of silence had him looking in her direction. The look of fear on her face had him regretting opening his mouth. But in a way he felt good for telling her, she needed to know and besides she would find out one day, right?
"What if I chose white magic?"
He rubbed his jaw in thought, "It's much of the same though your mate is chosen based on auras and spiritual forces. Except when your virginity is taken it's not about pleasures of the flesh but pleasure beyond the physical plain."
"So no matter which one I chose I don't get to decide who I spend the rest of my life with? How is that fair to me? Or anyone else?" She demanded.
He smiled at her. He cupped her cheek in his hand, his thumb running over the smooth skin of her cheek. "You're rather innocent aren't you? You believe in romance and long term happiness with the love of your life? That's unrealistic, sweet heart. This is the real world, things don't happen like that."
She grit her teeth, her stomach flipping. "What about you? Where's your mate?" Something inside her hoped that he didn't have one and she couldn't fathom why.
"I'm a dark warrior, I am very rarely in one place thus it is up to me whether or not I would like a mate. If the time comes when I feel that I would like companionship I can make it known and then later be matched up."
"Oh..."
The bell chimed behind them and he dropped his hand back down to his side, stuffing them back in the apron's pocket.
Eden quickly picked up the packets and stuffed them all onto the shelf before turning her attention to the customer.
Kane watched her silently, his eyes roaming over her slim frame. Her bright almond colored skin seemed to glow in the warm Mississippi sun, giving her a soft romantic light. She had told him that she had not had much male attention. He truly doubted that. She was a beautiful woman and he could only guess that she had probably been too oblivious to notice the attentive she received.
He frowned, his thoughts should not be on that. He found himself constantly reminding himself that he was with her for a specific reason. To protect her from herself, from others and primarily from co-coercion. The woman was more of a handful than she needed to be but in all honesty he found her beautiful. Attractive. Sexy.
And he couldn't blame his attraction to her solely on her powerful pheromones. He honestly liked her and that was not a part of his job description. He had been watching over her for almost two months now and as the days went by her powers were only silently growing, completely unaware to her.
She hadn't even unlocked all that she was capable of and little did she know that she was capable of magnificent things.
He sighed, he needed to make a report soon. He hadn't been in contact with the league since he had gotten near her and he knew that he couldn't keep up his silence. They'd want to know how powerful she really was. They'd want to know how much of her aura was truly dark and how much of it was light. They'd want to know how malleable she was to their plans.
That had always been a part of his assignment. But now, the more he interacted with her it all just felt wrong.
He hadn't told her that he could see her aura. It was the one thing about him that truly made him an asset to the league. Aura reading was hard to come by naturally but for him it was an ability that he felt more cursed with than thankful for.
He blinked as the doorbell chimed, signaling that the customer had left. His eyes trailed back over to Eden as she moved around stocking and making notes. She was a fascination to him. He had seen many auras, had read enough of them to know what a person's soul consisted of.
Her aura was a mixture of color. Clear reds, oranges, bright yellows, greens, blues, violets, golds and whites. The colors, to normal eyes, would have been painful to look at for numerous amounts of time. But for him it was a lovely sight, he had never encountered anyone with an aura so gorgeous, so pure.
To think that she was going to be tainted by the world of magic seemed almost cruel but that wasn't any of his concern. His job was to keep her safe until the day came where she could no longer prolong her days in the human realm. Whether or not she could actually survive in the myst of the two waring side was not his main priority.
He watched her as she dusted around the shelves of the display cases and sighed.
No matter how much he tried to convince himself that she was not getting underneath his skin... she was.
