(Calypso's POV)

The school bell rings, and everyone files out of the classroom. The hallways are filled with a flurry of students and backpacks.

It's loud, too. About 50 conversations swirl around the hallways as I head to my locker.

Once I have grabbed all of my stuff, I wave at the Stolls before leaving the building.

I need to buy food for dinner... I remind myself.

I live with an adoptive family, and we sure aren't rich. I do all the cooking, and our cupboards are pretty empty right now.

I hop in my car (that I have to share with my family, mind you) and drive over to the MiniMart a few blocks down.

I pull into the parking lot, and I see a ton of police cars herded into the southeast side. I can hear the sirens of an ambulance even before I see it turn the corner.

The ambulance pulls up to the bunch of police cars, and the back swings open.

Oh gosh, what happened?

I park and run to the other side of the parking lot, where I see a drunk guy being pushed up against his silver Chevy by an officer.

There's blood on his windshield...

I look over to the ambulance and see that they are loading someone onto a stretcher. I draw a little closer to see who it is.

Once I recognize the victim, my heart stops and leaps into my throat. A loud gasp escapes my lips.

It's Leo.

I run over to the ambulance, which they are loading Leo into. He's bloody, broken, and very unconscious.

"Miss, I'm going to have to ask you to leave. This is a restricted area."

"This is a parking lot," I reply with hostility.

"This is a crime scene."

"My friend is hurt. What the heck happened here?" I snap.

The police officer raises an eyebrow at my tone of voice, then looks me up and down. "You're the kid's friend? What's his name?"

"Leo Valdez, we go to school together. You have to let me go with him."

The ambulance is closing, and I plead with the officer. He gives me one final look before sighing and waving me over.

I yell my thanks before running over to the ambulance. A few news reporters run over to me.

"Are you the boy's friend?"

"Were you here when it happened?"

"Have you-"
