I have heard so many boys say the female population is so hard to understand. Well, here is a secret for when she is sad. 

I don't care how she acts, who she is, or what she says. When I girl hugs herself, if you care about her, you drop what you are doing and you hug her. Hug her as hard as you can; make her realize that you care and are there. But sometimes, don't say anything. Just let your actions speak for you. There are going to be times when we don't need those word of encouragement or love, because we really do believe that actions speak louder than words.

So please, if you see a girl hugging herself, just hug her, because I guarantee, you are the only thing that can be holding her together.
