{{Chapter Eleven}} (Part 1)
“Please some out, Honey!” my mom begged through my bedroom door. She had tried anything to get me out of here but I refused.
It had been a week and two days since I’d seen Dr. Walker and after I booked it out of the mall I hadn’t left my room. I was scared.
“Aren’t you hungry?” she asked trying to lure me out with promises of sweet treats. She hadn’t given me food since I escaped off into my room; little did she know that dad snuck me McDonald’s or other fast food every few hours.
Dad and Gina – forced by mother of course – had tried as well. My dad had asked when he gave me the food and I spilled the beans because I needed someone to speak to. I was scared that if I came out of here then Dr. Walker would find me. I know that I’m stronger than him but the thought of them having jadeite is terrifying enough not to leave the comfort of my safe home.
“You have school today, Greenly. You can’t afford to not go anymore unless you wish to be held back once again.” Mom said and I glared at her through the door.
“You won’t have to worry about that if I’m dead.” I snapped and she gasped.
“That’s enough Greenly,” I heard my Dad’s voice, muffled by the door. “You are going to school today and that’s final.”
I could have cried. My head was full of ideas that wouldn’t escape, wouldn’t let me even sleep, and now he expects me to get up and go to school? Like everything in the world is great?
“Dad, Dr. Walk–”
“I know Greenly, but enough is enough.” He cut me off through the door. “You can’t let them dictate your life, you can protect yourself anyway.”
“Yeah, but I can’t protect all of you!” I shout as I open the door and glare at my parents. “What if they come after you while I’m at school? Who’ll protect you then, huh?”
“We’ll protect them.” I heard behind then and I looked around to see Ryder, and Gina, who was clinging to Ryder’s arm like it was her lifeline.
“What happens if they go after you then? Your family? Your friends? I wouldn’t be able to live with myself knowing something happened because of me.” I said exasperated. They didn’t understand that I was acting like this for a reason. Not just to yank their chains.
“We’ll all be fine, my grandmother and Marie said they would train us better, and you so that we’re prepared. I’ll help you.” Ryder explains and I saw his eyes soften as he took in my scared frame. I felt warm and protected while he was around. Gina just had to cut in though.
“You’ll protect me, right Ryder?” she whined in his ear and I let out a quiet giggle when he flinched at her high pitched voice.
“Gina, let go of him,” my father said sternly and I remembered that he was here. Dang! He’s quite a quiet man…when company’s here.
“Dad, he’s my – ”
“No he’s not,” my father snorted and laid a hand on his hip. “He hasn’t said a word to you since he arrived. If anything he’s Greenly’s boyfriend.” I almost laughed at Dad until I realized those last words he tried to sneak in.
“Dad – ” I started but he cut off yet another child of his.
“Nope, don’t want to hear it.” He practically yelled and put his fingers in his ears to drown out any sound. “Come downstairs before I take your cellphone Gina.”
Gina sent me a glare before trudging down the stairs after my dad.
“Your dad is…interesting,” Ryder murmured.
