D- Dinner

(A very awkward one)

Alec was trying very hard not to make eye contact with his father.

Isabelle had decided to meet up with Simon and Maia (mostly Simon) and Jace was with Clary, having a dinner with Jocelyn and Luke. That left Alec, Maryse and Robert to have their Tuesday evening meal alone in the Institute. It was the first time that he had been alone with his parents since he had introduced them properly to Magnus, and an awkward tension was descending over the three Lightwoods.

"So... Alec, how's Magnus?" Maryse asked, obviously eager to diffuse the tension.

Alec looked up from his stir-fry. "Uh... Fine I guess. He's been busy with some feud between the Vampires and Werewolves recently."

Robert snorted. "I don't see why he didn't turn it over to us."

"Probably not important enough." Alec replied, only half sarcastically.

"Yes, probably." Maryse agreed hurridly.

Robert sighed. "It's not like I dislike Downworlders, I just think-"

"That you're above them." Alec finished.

"Since when were you so interested in Downworlder-Nephilim equality?" Robert asked dryly.

Alec frowned down at his vegetables. "Why shouldn't I be?"

"Because you might wake up one day and find out that your... boyfriend... Has stolen your hairs for some dark spell." Robert sneered.

Alec looked incredulous. "Magnus isn't like that."

"You never know with queers." Robert muttered.

Alec froze. "What did you say?"

"I said you never know with queers." Robert shrugged.

"Robert, dear, you can't say that." Maryse tried gently.

Robert laughed bitterly. "Why not? It's what he is. It's what they both are." He leaned forwards. "What I don't understand, is why you turned out queer when I raised you so well. What turned you gay Alexander?"

Alec's mouth was dry. "I... What? Nothing turned me gay. I was born... I don't... It's nothing you did."

"I should think not!" Robert laughed.

"Hold up. You can't just say something like that and then laugh as if everything's okay." Alec's breathing had turned ragged.

"Do not tell me what to do in my own household." His father hissed. "Not now that you've shamed me. You're a disgrace to the Lightwood name."

"Robert..." Maryse warned.

Robert turned on her. "No Maryse. He is an embarrassment." He turned back to Alec. "Get out."

"What?"

"Get out! I don't want you in this family!" Robert yelled.

Maryse stood. "Robert, he's our son! You can't do that!"

Alec appeared to be in a state of shock.

"It's either him or me Maryse!" Robert stood too. "Either he goes or I will."

Maryse looked horrified. "Go." She said weakly. "Go. You're a lier, and I won't have you around if you're embarrassed by your own son."

Robert turned on his heels and marched away, silently, letting the front door open with a bang. "I'll be in Idris. I don't know when or if I'll be back." He turned and slammed the door shut.

Maryse sat and held a hand out to her son. Alec gripped it tightly, scrunching his eyes shut.

"Mom, I'm so sorry. I'm so so sorry."

She smiled at him weakly. "It's not your fault."

Alec was silent. "Mom..."

"Would you mind...?" Maryse silently hinted. "I need to be alone. To think. If you see your sister, can you tell her that he went on a business call. She can't know..."

Alec nodded, squeezing his mother's hand. "I understand."

Central Park at night was kind of beautiful at three in the morning.

Alec was sitting underneath an elm tree thinking about what had happened. He had cried a little bit, but had been left feeling drained and empty.

"You know," a familiar voice called out of the dark, "it's not safe to be out in parks at this sort of time."

Alec exhaled. "I'm a Shadowhunter Magnus, I think I can handle a few mundane muggers."

Magnus sat down next to Alec, bumping his shoulder with Alec's.

"Your Mom told me what happened."

"Figures."

"Do you want to talk about it?"

"Not really."

Magnus didn't push him.

"I'm just tired," Alec began, "of all the little things. People changing. The Clave not listening to me. The looks. Dad telling me no 'queer' was going to be his son!"

"He said that?"

"Yeah."

"Do you want me to turn him into a rat?" Magnus asked seriously.

Alec snorted. "By the Angel Magnus, that would probably make things worse. But thank you."

"Any day Cupcake."

"Cupcake? Really?"

"No?"

"No."

They sat in silence for a while, the quiet not being awkward but comforting, knowing someone's there physically, but not having to say anything.

"We should probably get back to the apartment." Magnus said at last. He stood and held his hand down for Alec to pull himself up. They stayed holding hands, face to face for three long heartbeats.

"I'm sorry." Alec whispered.

"What for biscuit? You've done nothing wrong."

"For me being mortal."

Magnus made a sound that was a mixture of a laugh and a sob. He pulled Alec into his chest, resting his chin on the top of Alec's head.

"Alexander Gideon Lightwood. I've been alive eight hundred years and I've never met anyone as wonderful as you. Being mortal is a blessing, it makes your life mean something and if you start feeling bad about that then I'm going to have to do something about it. We have each other. That's all that matters. Okay?"

"I love you Magnus." Alec said.

Magnus smiled. "As I love you." he had never been one for tacking the 'too' on the end, it made it sound less sincere and genuine.

He kissed his boyfriend gently before taking him by the hand and pulling him towards the general direction of the apartment.

"By the way Magnus, do you have any food? I never actually ate any dinner." Alec asked
