Enjoy!Hello there! My name is Terrance Magnum and I'm about to tell you the story of how my life turned upside down, almost literally.

I heard my engine rumbling as I watched the open road spreading out before me. . . My tires spun faster and faster as I sped forward with ease, devouring the black carpet with ease. . . For the first time in my entire life, I felt truly free from all of my problems and a truck horn sounded off in the distance. . .
On this glorious morning, I woke from the dream with a soft sigh of content and silently wished I could be that free. I started my day by walking to my high school and everything seemed to be going normally. Bullies were stationed at the front doors, cheerleaders were clutching at the larger football jocks, and the book worms were just trying not to be caught in between the two groups. I had been playing football for five years now and had a pretty good rap sheet; however, I'm also the smartest person in my senior class. It came in handy when I got cornered by the quarterback and his thugs. Somehow, I made it inside without a problem and headed to my first hour Creative Writing class.
My teacher, Mr. Bane, looked up from his papers and scowled at me as if I had stolen a pen from him. He was always like this and I didn't let his icy stare ruffle my feathers. His screechy voice sounded like an old door opening, "Where is your essay, Magnum? If you're here this early you should be able to hand the paper to me right now."
I walked to his desk, dropped the eight page essay with a dull thud, and walked back to my desk without a single word. My phone buzzed in my pocket and I pulled it out to see a text message from my father saying:
Terry,
Just letting you know that I will be home later than planned tonight. Dinner is in the fridge.
Love you!
DadHonestly I had no idea how my father, Aaron Magnum, could work three jobs and not go insane. When my mother died in a car accident a few days after I was born, he had gone away from home for five days before returning home. I had been placed in the hands of a babysitter during that time. In later years his actions taught me a lot about how not to handle grief.
The starting bell rang and I was still the only student in the room. I inwardly groaned and gazed at the ceiling, ' Please just let me sit here, Bane. . . You're the Bane of my existence! I loved to make that pun about Mr. Bane's name, but never said it aloud for fear of the old man throwing something at me.
As if he had been reading my thoughts, Mr. Bane waved a knarled hand my way and creaked, "Get going. You're dismissed to go to the library and do whatever you do there."
I thanked him and scampered to my safe haven. This was the place I retreated to when I was feeling down or just didn't want to go to class. I headed straight for the Historical Fiction section, plucked a book that peeked my interest, and then sat down at a table nestled in the back corner to read in peace. The cover had a geometric face-like symbol on it and the title was: Declassified: Autobots & Decepticons
What is this? I began to read and instantly became immersed in the information nestled within the pages. Time became irrelevant to me as I drew the symbol into my sketchbook and then began to read about the Autobot leader of the Cybertronian beings. Optimus Prime. . . A bell tore me from of my trance and I looked at the clock. It read 10:35am. Shoot! I'm late for Calculus! I checked the book out and hurried to my class with the image of the Autobot symbol ingrained into my mind's eye.

The rest of the day crept by at a snails pace. As the final bell rang, my feet hurriedly carried me out of the building and all the way down to the city bus stop. It was a few blocks from the school and I made it there just as the bus was pulling up. I took the bus all the way to its last stop and headed into my father's quaint restaurant.
It wasn't too big of a big place, but it was frequented by plenty of people so business never slowed down. The casual setting made it easy for families to hang out close to home and for teens to meet up with friends safely. I entered, chose a booth closer to the kitchen, and pulled out the book on the Autobots again.
"Hey there, Terrance. How was school today?" My father had my same raven colored hair and the same soldier-like build. He towered above most at 6'2"; however, I was 6'1" and could easily look him in the eye. His gentle hazel eyes found my icy blue, " You doing okay?"
"Yeah, Dad. I'm just hungry for a burger with some fries." I winked at him as he rolled his eyes skyward and I got back to reading my book. After several minutes, the smell of a freshly cooked burger and fries momentarily pulled me away from the book. I devoured my meal and worked on the chocolate shake as I continued to read.
The book dove into how Optimus and his other Autobots had come to Earth, how they had saved our world multiple times, and how they were now working with the US Army against the Decepticons. It peaked my interest and my eyes scanned the pages with adoration for some reason. . . These beings are awesome! If I could meet one. . . That would be sweet.
My father took my plates back to the kitchen, punched out of his shift, and inquired, "You ready to go home?"
I nodded, put the book in my bag, and followed him outside to our car. The old Camaro's once vibrant yellow paint and stark black racing stripes were faded, but it was still a reliable car in my father's eyes. Soft, worn old leather seats had seen better days; however, they were welcoming to my exhausted form as I sank down into the passenger seat with a soft sigh.
Dad took the wheel and we were soon on the road home; however, he stopped at the local sightseeing park near our neighborhood. We had visited this park a lot when I was younger. Back in those days, my mom had been with us too... My father sighed softly and asked me, "You want to take a walk with me. . . or stay with the car?"
"I'll stay with the car, Dad." I watched him leave and disappear from view. Once I was sure he was gone did I slowly get out of the car and gingerly sit down on the hood to gaze up at the faint stars beginning to shimmer in the sky. My thoughts turned to my mother and I quickly smothered them. There's no use in blaming yourself for something you had no control over. . . A loud buzzing sound wizzed past my ear and I sat up, waving my hand around my hear to shoo the annoyance away. I honestly thought it was a bee of a fly; however, I knew I was wrong when I caught a glimpse of it.
I yelped in surprise as I noticed my attacker was a small robot that looked like a bug. Its pinchers were embedded in my skin and it bit down over and over again, as if to cause as much damage to me as it could. I watched the creepy thing begin to draw blood and I finally had had enough. My pointer finger and thumb locked onto the little thing and I whimpered as I struggled to get it to let go. After a couple more excruciating seconds, the bug let go of my flesh and buzzed off into the darkening sky. I realized that I would probably have to get a couple stitches as I assessed the damage the robot did and sighed.
My dad returned to the car at dusk and I hid my wounded arm under my hoodie as we talked about school during the drive home. I bid him good night once we arrived and applied medical treatment to my wounded arm in the privacy of my bathroom. The bite had started to ache, but I paid no attention to it. Like all insect bites, I assumed it'd be just fine in the morning. If only I knew that that bite would change my life forever.
