Jessie's POV
I pace around my flat waiting for Danny to call. He was supposed to let me know how it went... I look at the clock. 10:37 PM. Surely they would be done by now? I decide that I can't wait anymore and pick up my phone. I call Danny and wait to answer. It rings a dozen times before he picks up.
"Hello?" He sounds so...so broken...
"Danny? It's Jessie. What happened?"
"Callie...oh, Callie..." It's all he can say. I hear him take a shuddering sigh on the other end of the phone.
"What about Callie? Is she okay?" I ask frantically.
"We don't know, Jessie. She's still in surgery."
"Surgery? What the hell happened?"
"She got shot three times by that fucking bastard that adopted her. Doctors say once in the bottom of each lung and once in her right shoulder."
"Is she going to survive the procedure?"
"They're not sure. They're trying, they have to, she's lost a lot of blood."
"Oh my God..." I feel tears start falling down my face. "How could he do that to her? She's just a kid!"
"He's a right fucking bastardly arse is what he is."
"Did you get the flashdrives from the house so he can't have her?"
"Oh yeah. The Gardaí are looking over them now."
"The what?"
"The police."
"Oh." There is silence for a few moments. "Danny, please call me back when she's out of surgery and let me know what the doctor's say. I'm so worried for her," I whisper.
"Of course."
"Thanks, Dan. Good night. I love you."
"No problem, babe. Night. I love you too." And then he hangs up.
I can't believe that Callie could be dying. I just can't believe it, refuse to! I pace around my flat, Jackson at my heels. I wonder if it would be worth it to go to Ireland to see them. Then I remember that 1. I don't know which hospital they're at, 2. Danny and I still haven't gone public, so 3. his family isn't likely to know, which 4. could be potentially disastrous for Danny, not to mention 5. the stress he's already dealing with. I decide to wait it out and hope for the best. I put on a movie just to have something to do while waiting for Danny's call.
At 12:19, my phone rings. I jump and pick it up. "Hello?"
"Jess, hey. Callie's just out of surgery, but there was...a slight...complication, the doctors said."
"Oh no, what was it?"
"Well, she's fallen into a coma. Had a bad, no, extremely bad reaction to the anesthetic. Nobody knew because she's never been in for any anesthetic-requiring operations, and nobody in her family that got surgery before hasn't reacted like that. They're not sure when she'll wake up, or if she will at all..."
"Oh, God no! She has to wake up, Danny, she has to!"
"Don't be so sure." I've never heard him sound so defeated before.
"Other than that, how did the surgery go?"
"Fine. The bullets in her back just barely pierced her lungs since they were hand-gun bullets, and small ones at that. The one in her shoulder missed any vital tendons and such, so she should be able to recovery completely."
"Well, that's good, right?"
"Yeah. The doctor's have said that she can be transported to London when she's in stable condition."
"Do they have any idea how long it'll take her to get stable?"
"Not a clue." He pauses for a few seconds. "Listen, Jess, I've got to go. The Commissioner wants to speak with me about what happened. I'll call you if I get any news about Callie. I love you."
"Okay. I love you too." And then we hang up.

Short chapter is short. But they love each other, so it's okay.
I'll probably update again tonight...
