Chatting with Glen

Jessie's POV

It's been a week since Callie's fallen into a coma and Danny just called telling me that she was being transported today to the Great Ormond Street Hospital. It's just noon now, and Danny told me she was being transported today at one. They were going to be airlifted to Great Ormond Street Hospital, so it should take only an hour or so. I have at least two hours to burn before they come back. I decide to go for a run to clear my head.

For some reason, my feet bring me to Glen's house. That's odd; we're not even that friendly. I walk up the steps to his front door and knock on it. A few seconds later, he opens the door. "Jessie! What a surprise," he says, but not unkindly. "Come on in, make yourself at home. Pardon the mess."

I look around his flat. "If this is what a mess looks like to you, Glen, I'd love to see how clean it is when you consider it clean," I tell him, sitting on the couch.

He laughs and says, "Maybe I'll call you over one day if it ever is. Can I get you something to drink?"

"Just a water, please."

"Sure thing." He gets up and soon returns with a tall glass of water. "So what's up?"

"I don't know, really. I just went out for a run and ended up here."

"Have you heard anything new from Danny?"

"Yeah, they're being transported to Great Ormond Street Hospital today."

"Well, at least they'll be closer to home."

"Definitely."

"Can you believe what caused the coma in the first place?"

"No, Danny didn't say..."

"Maybe he didn't want to upset you..."

"C'mon, Glen, you've gotta tell me now!"

"Alright, fine. Apparently someone wrote the report wrong. You know how it's just like age, weight, and height, and it's just those numbers with dashes or something between them? The anesthetist read the report wrong. Instead of reading nine years old, 43 pounds, they read 94.3 kilos."

"Kilos?"

"Yup. I don't know how they got kilograms from pounds, and I don't want to know, but they gave her a dosage of anesthetic for someone that weighed 207.5 pounds. That's almost five times her weight. And it was a strong anesthetic because it would be a long surgery and they wanted her to sleep until the pain meds kicked in."

"Danny must have been furious when he found out...!"

"I heard them give him a mild tranquilizer."

"You're kidding!"

"Not at all!"

"How'd they get it in him?"

"Well, he was raging around real late at night and Mandy was there checking on Callie or whatever and she heard that he was raging so she got a shot full of tranquilizer and slammed it into his arm. Went out like a light. Dropped to the floor right where he was, mid-sentence."

"And that's a mild tranquilizer?"

"They judge it's strength by how long it knocks them out for. Few hours is mild."

"Who was he ranting to?"

"Me! He was on the phone, yelling at the top of his lungs---this was at like two in the morning or something, mind---and then all of a sudden he just stops mid-sentence. Then there's a loud thud and Mandy picks up the phone and says 'he was tranquilized' and hangs up! It was mental!"

I laugh and we end up chatting for about another hour or so before I decide I have to go. "It's been nice talking to you Glen, but I've got to get back now. Thanks for just, you know, letting me barge in without any warning."

"You too, Jessie. And any time!" Glen replies cheerily, leading me to the door. I jog back to my flat and take a quick shower. As soon as I get out, the phone rings. I wrap a towel around myself and hurry to answer it.

"Hello?"

"Hey Jess! We just landed."

"Great! I'll come round in half an hour or so; I want to see Callie and then we can...do something, I guess, if you want."

"Very specific," he comments dryly. Just like I said to him the day of our first date.

"Oh, shush, you!"

He laughs quietly and says, "Alright. See you soon! I love you!"

"Love you too!" We hang up.

Pretty certain that hospital reports are not just age-weight-height kind of deal, but for the sake of this story, they are. :P

Also pretty sure that hospitals can't give tranquilizers to raging people, but they can in this story. ;)
