"Who's this?" My father asked. His voice boomed with threatening authority, his shoulders broadened and his eyes burned with intense curiosity. With that, apprehension rises within me, I quickly reached for my father's arm and gently squeezed his forearm in a reassuring way. He directed his gaze back at me and I took it as a signal to speak again.
"Uh... Dad this is Harry, Harry my father." I moved sideways to let Harry face my father properly for the introduction. Harry took a step forward and held out a hand in front of him and my father.
"Harry Styles, sir." Harry spoke without any hint of nervousness in his voice. He stood proud and confident in front of him. My father, who looked hesitant to accept Harry's civil handshake, nodded his head in assent instead. Harry casually dropped his hand back to his side and it seems like my father's crude welcome to his presence didn't bother him at all.
I switched my glances, back and forth, between the two of them and observed how my father and Harry would behave to each other. I have an ominous feeling that this will not go well. My father is being stubborn and uncharacteristic, he used to be so welcoming and cheerful when it comes to house guests, while Harry is being the confident and usual person he is when meeting new people. Their attitudes are utterly clashing together.
My father gestures us over the threshold into inside the house, into the small foyer, and then to well-kept living room. Everything is still the same since I left. A large three seater cushion is placed in the middle of the room with two arm chairs situated on both sides. A tinted glass table is horizontally positioned in the center of the chairs. Opposite from the couch, a small stone carved fireplace is attached to the wall, and above it, a large flat screen TV is supported by the metal bracket behind.
"So..." I trailed off, breaking the tense atmosphere inside the house. I expected my father to act this way but not this extreme. I feel like he's completely fighting the urge to kick Harry out of the house, and into the pavement outside, just for the sake of me. His unusual behavior got me thinking whether my father knew Harry before and loathed him, because you can feel the hatred he has over him. Or maybe not hatred but annoyance.
"I want to tell you that we won't be visiting your grandparents this year, I have urgent meetings from time to time and I need to be there." My father said promptly. He briskly walked across the living room to the kitchen area, leaving Harry near the foyer and I, in the living room.
My father is obviously upset slash mad at me for inviting someone without his consent. I know it's wrong to not inform him but it's a last minute decision. I know he won't say yes if it's a guy he doesn't know and, again, my conscience won't stop nagging me if I know that I left Harry all alone in the dormitory. "Still, you could've left him." The evilness in me whispered.
"I'm sorry about that." I apologized as Harry strode towards me in the living room. Without my father around, he actually looked kinda worried, or is it just the illusion because half of his face is under the linear streak of sunlight and the other half is hidden in the shadows?
"It's okay." He shrugged. Harry carefully placed his bag on the foot of the couch and stood back up facing me. He took another step forward leaving at least two inches of space between us."Do you want me to leave?" Harry asked grimly.
"No, I'll talk to him." I plastered a small and assuring smile at him before taking two steps back, increasing the space between us, and started to make my way to the kitchen. I walked past the windows covering almost all the one side of the wall, where the fireplace is also attached, while in between the regular intervals of the windows, some picture frames, both my father and I back in the days, are hanging on the wall. The sunlight passing through abundant glass windows are the only thing lighting up the room. My father always liked a house full of windows.
