I woke to the feeling of someone shaking my arm. I looked up to see my roommate, Anna, hovering over me smacking a piece of bubble gum in between her teeth. "Weren't you leaving around ten?" She asked snootily.I looked up at her while pieces of my dark brown hair hung in front of my eyes. "Yeah, what time is it? " I asked in a groggy tone.
"Like, nine fifty-five" she said pointing at my digital clock laying next to my head on the nightstand.
"Shit!" I hollered as I jumped up out of bed. I looked down at my clock wondering why my alarm didn't go off twenty minutes ago. And noticed I had accidentally set it for p.m instead of a.m. I didn't even bother asking Anna why she didn't get me up earlier, because I knew she'd have some rude witty remark. Anna and I don't get along very well and the bad thing is neither of us can afford an apartment so we're stuck staying with each other in our college dorm, but she's usually out partying and staying at her boyfriends so it works out I guess.
I rushed to get ready. I pulled my hair up into a bun, quickly brushed my teeth and then threw on a pair of black sweatpants, and a white spaghetti strap shirt, and slipped on a pair of plain white Adidas sneakers. I put my back pack on and grabbed my carry-on luggage and ran out the door without even a goodbye to Anna.
I made it to the airport on time. The plane ride home to L.A was extremely boring. It was a five hour flight and when your sitting right next to an old man looking at a Playboy magazine it doesn't make it any better. I napped for about two hours of the flight and read my book "The Great Gatsby". Eventually we landed and I quickly got my luggage and went to go find my mom in the airport.
There she was sitting on a bench reading a People magazine, waiting for me. I noticed she had dyed her hair from dark brown to a caramel color, it was bobbed with bangs. My mother and I look a lot alike. We were the same height 5'7, and both petite with dark brown eyes and very dark brown hair.
I snuck up behind her and tapped her shoulder. She jumped and looked behind her. "You startled me! Oh my goodness I've missed you." She said with a wide teethe smile.
"I missed you too mom, sorry I haven't called in so long I haven't felt very good."
"You've been taking your meds haven't you?" She asked raising her eyebrows.
"Obviously, why wouldn't I?" I said leaning in for a hug.
"Well I remember how stubborn you used to be about taking them because you didn't think you needed them."
"Well that's when I was fifteen and watched that documentary on how medicine was just a way for the government to make money" I said laughing.
We made our way into the car and began riding home. I shared stories about college and New York and how much I missed home, and she shared stories about my step dad and my little five year old sister.
About fifteen minutes later after, it was silent for a few seconds, I was about to open my mouth and say something when she interrupted with "we have someone staying at our house for the um summer" she said with a slight look of fear because of what I might say. I wasn't really surprised though because she has done this before, a lot. Bringing people whom I barley knew to stay in our guest bedroom for a few nights to a few months. Usually people she knew from work, relatives or neighbors, that needed a place to stay for a while. My mom liked giving people a place to stay and so did my step dad, they didn't mind it, and in there mind they think that they're good citizens for doing so.
"Who is it staying with us this time?" asked looking the other way out the window.
"A boy, around your age. He's going to be in a movie your step dad, Frank, is working on .
"If he's an actor why can't he stay at a hotel? I mean aren't actors rich or whatever?"
"Well the hotels around here are quite expensive and Frank didn't want him to waste his money on one, and plus it would be easier for him to have cooked meals and to have a homely environment to stay."
"Whatever.... uh what's his name? Have I heard of him?"
"His name is Leonardo DiCaprio, he's been in a few movies I'm not sure that you've seen any of them."
I stayed quiet. Hm, Leonardo DiCaprio, what a long weird name, I mean who would name there kid Leonardo? Well I mean I guess it's kinda cool. I mean kids in school teased me for my name "Lucy" because it sounded so old fashioned. Maybe it's a stage name he uses.
It was weird how I sat and pondered the thought of his name rather than the thought of some boy staying at my house for the summer, and me having to see him everyday in my home, and oh gosh the thought of me looking like a heroin addict today with no make-up and baggy clothing on my very thin body. Oh boy this summer is going to be great. (please note my sarcasm)
Thank you for reading!
