College Fun

Auntie and Uncle had just left into the darkness. Uncle seemed calm and happy. It was kind of weird actually considering JT attacked Colleen. Auntie on the other hand, well, lets just say she's accepting it as it is. There's something she wants to change between them, but can't. It wasn't JT's fault though. It was based on instinct. It was something I could relate to. I was relieved to hear that Colleen was okay overall, and that they had allowed JT to look after her. There shouldn't be any reason for Auntie not to trust JT. I guess that was a parent thing. Something that even at almost two centuries old, I would never understand.

Until this day, I'd always asked myself, 'Why didn't he choose to be a non-human like my mother and I'? We have tried to change him, persuade him to consider the benefits of becoming immortal, and even get her family involved. His family were no where to be found. None of them seemed to work. He was very adamant, and very determined to not be anything else but human. Father refused to explain to me why he chose that path of mortality. Protecting me from all that was hurtful was what he was most good at. I have yet to ask and force the truth out of him. Above all of that, I'm just glad he's alive and healthy.

The last memory I had of my father was the scent of lumber and peppermint. The peppermint was always close to my father. He never would have smelled of anything else but that. I remembered my warm hands stroking the ice coldness of his. His face was wrinkled and aged, but he did still look like the man I called my father. My family had been separated for centuries. From time to time, we would get together to celebrate a lot of things. Birthdays, Christmas, Thanksgivings and a lot of other human holidays, but not often. They were just a little different food wise. My birthday was one of those days when I had met Uncle Markus. The uncle I never knew I had. His reddish hair and blue eyes made it looked like we were related. I just wondered why the real reason he came into town. He didn't just come into town for my birthday. He came into town for another reason. A reason that's probably not a good one. I just can't put my finger on it. Then another thing, why was he a vampire when my father wasn't? I know Auntie told me this story a long time ago about how she became a vampire. A stranger attacked her. How in the hell did Mark become a vampire? Now this really was a mystery.

It was night, and the moon was shining bright through my living room window. Its white light streaked across my carpeted floor. The moon was large and perfectly round in the middle of the indigo sky. Stars formed tiny clustered groups around its leader. My chest fluttered as my mind was at ease. My eyes were glued to the window, unable to move. Then, the image of the human I had seen yesterday flashed into my head. His blondish brown hair and soft thin lips tickled my stomach. Was I really thinking about him? A human? A weak and very vulnerable being? What was wrong with me? Why was I doing this to myself?

I shook my head softly hoping to erase the memory, and plopped onto the couch effortlessly. My favorite book, the Barren Twelve sat on the table with a bookmark holding my place. I needed something to get my mind off of him. This wasn't a good time to think emotionally about a human. What would my mother say? She has already made it clear that I would never mate with a human. I don't think I ever will. I turned to my bookmarked page and started to read, and read, and read. My book was working. My mind was distracted. Now if only I could block out the annoying ring of the telephone. Obviously, I couldn't.

I placed my bookmark in my unfinished page and went to answer the phone. I slammed it to my ear, knowing who it was.

"Hello?" My voice was flat and expressionless.

"Hey, cuz. Are you okay?" It was Colleen again.

"I'm fine. How about you? Get a lot of sleep?" I asked her.
