Turning Point

There was a note on the fridge. Its hand writing was neat:

Gone to think. Be back. Jayce.

I pulled the note from the magnet and sat at the stool. I had smelled blood. It was coming from the glass that was sitting in the sink. Jayce. Shit! I hopped down from the stool and ran to the bathroom to shower. I took a quick shower and got dressed. A tee and old jeans.

I grabbed my keys and headed out of the front door into the morning sun. When I opened the door, Jayce was sitting on the top step, his back was turned away from me. I closed the door and walked onto the porch.

"What are you doing out here?" I asked, the keys tight in my hand.

"What are you doing in the sun?" He didn't look at me.

"What do you mean?"

"You know exactly what I mean. You'll die out here. I think you should go back inside."

I looked up at the bright blue sky.

"You found it." I mumbled.

He scoffed. "Found it? Stephanie, I drank it. It was disgusting. You actually drink that shit?"

"Jayce it's not what you think. I'm not a vampire. I'm something completely different."

"So either way, you were lying?"

"It wasn't a lie. I just didn't want you to know. I wanted to protect you."

"What's the difference? It's still a lie no matter how you place it, Stephanie."

His silence terrified me.

"Can we please go inside to talk. Can we not do this out here?"

"Why? Afraid everyone would find out about your dirty secret?"

"Okay, I deserved that." I said.

"Apparently, I don't deserve you. I can't stay here. I have to go." I ran to his side and placed my hand on his cheek. He moved away from my touch.

"Don't do this Jayce. Please. I'll tell you everything. Just please don't go. I'm finally happy. Please." A tear left my eye.

He didn't even glance at me. His eyes stayed straight ahead.

"Please Jayce, look at me. Can I see those beautiful blue eyes?"

His eyes pierced mine. I have never felt this much disappointment and sadness. Not since my family separated. It made my heart drop.

"Jayce. Please let me explain this to you. Just come inside with me."

He sighed, then stood on the porch. He opened the door and followed me in. He sat on the sofa, waiting.

I sat in the armchair. He leaned back. His eyes focused on my expression and arms crossed. Here it goes.

"Where do you want me to start? How my family came to be or what's happening now?"

"Everything." he said.

I hesitated, then relaxed. "Okay. About four centuries ago, my grandfather, Cole Pierce was walking home from work. It was dark and isolated where he lived. Away from town."

"Where?" he asked.

"Here in Joliet. He was alone that night. A stranger approached him and attacked him. A vampire. It bit him. Almost drained him dry. The venom traveled through his veins and began the change almost instantly. Once he got home, he told my grandmother, Sylvia what happened. She woke my dad who was seventeen at the time and my Aunt Maggie who was nineteen, and my Uncle Mark, I guess who was twenty one. They were all human.
