She's Missing
The faint even thump of Jayce's heart caused my spine to crumble. He was sleeping right upstairs. His heartbeat sounded like it was closer than it really was. Even with my door closed and ear plugs in, I still managed to hear it. I guess I could expect that from having a human staying with me.
I was still in shock at realizing that Jayce was the human I was attracted to on the road. He is much more beautiful up close and personal. His blue eyes were so captivating and unforgettable. The best part was that he remembered me too.
The shuffling of his feet had awoken me even though I was already awake. The hall was dim with sunlight. I entered the kitchen to see Jayce standing at the sink with a glass in his hand. He turned around quickly, holding his chest.
"Oh, gosh. You scared me." He was trying to catch his breath.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. I heard you up, and that kinda woke me." I sat in a stool.
He turned back around to pour a glass of milk. He took a delicate sip, then focused his attention back on me again.
"How did you sleep?" I asked.
"I slept fine. I love that room. It was very comfortable." His hair was slicked away from his face revealing the structure of his features.
"I bet."
"You never go in there?"
"Occasionally." I lied.
"You did wonders in there."
"Thanks." I said, practically mumbling. He took another delicate sip.
"The house is amazing too. How did you get a hold of such a beautiful house like this?"
"My Aunt Magdelina and Uncle David used to live here some years ago. They felt that this house was too big for them. So they gave it to me."
"Do you like living alone?"
"It has its advantages. The one thing I don't have to worry about is cleaning up after people."

"You don't have to worry about me. I'm fairly decent in cleaning."
I nodded. He finished his milk and rinsed it out.
"Well, I better check on my car and try to fix it."
"Okay. I'll get breakfast started."
"That sounds good."
He gave me a warm smile, then proceeded up the stairs. As I hopped down from the stool, the bell rang. Oh no! Now. It better not be Colleen this time. I hesitantly stood at the door and reached for the golden knob. I took a deep breath and opened it.
"Logan?" My voice nearly cracked.
"Hi Stephanie. I was wondering if my sister was here."
"No," I looked into his worried blue eyes. "Is she missing?"
"Yeah. She didn't show up to the party and she hasn't returned any of my calls. I'm starting to get worried Steph."
"Come in." I stood aside. He walked past me with the smell of ember and oak clinging to him. I could understand why he was walking through the woods. I like to think there too.
He sat on the sofa, nearly shaking. I sat next to him and held his hand. It was warm, soft and quivering. The hard pulse beating against the walls of his hand hit mine. The sting of my spine from this morning was increasing. I closed my eyes and took long deep breaths. After the tenth breath, the stinging soothed.
