Jay walked down the hall of James County High School. A drop of sweat rolled down his forehead, and splashed to the ground.
Just do it. Just do it. He thought over and over.
Jay wiped off his forehead , passing under an arch, where a limp banner hung.
Just go for it! It read.
You have no idea
Jay wiped his hands on his shirt.
Am I really this sweaty?
Halfway there. The bell rang, and the halls starting filling with kids pushing and shoving, eager for the summer. Jay hardly took notice. He only took notice of her. Hailee Chase. She was a tall honey blonde, with sky blue eyes that made him melt on the inside. She was perfect.
Hailee tossed her hair and said a few words to her friend before walking down the hall toward Jay.
She locked eyes with him and smiled. Jay's stomach fluttered. He took one last look at the poster before walking toward her."Hey." She said.
"Hey yourself." He replied. All of his instincts told him to turn and run. "So...uh... Hailee..."
She raised one eyebrow in expectation. Bad sign. Jay's mind screamed at him, blaring red lights in his head. DANGER. DANGER. They screamed. He felt as if his head was going to explode. He flipped his hair to clear his senses."So I was wondering..." Hailee blinked impatiently. Jay gulped. "Do you want to go out with me?" He instantly blushed.
Hailee felt her face turn red. She took a step back."Wow...um this is really sudden, don't you think Jay? I mean..." Jay looked crushed and started to turn away. "Wait." He looked back, his eyes filled with hope. "I just... Need some time to think okay?" She bit her lip. Jay swallowed and nodded, unable to speak.
"Okay." Hailee gave him one last smile and hurried away.
That was five days ago. The scene had replayed in Jay's head for hours. He had told no one except for his best friends, Casey Johnson, India Merez, Matt Bridger, and Abby Liate.
Jay had asked a simple question that required a simple answer. But girls were a complicated business, and Jay couldn't fully understand. Summer vacation had started two days ago.Maybe she just said that so I wouldn't feel as bad. She's just toying with me.
Jay rolled over in his bed, and stared out the bright window. A picture of his parents was on the table next to his bed. Both of them had died in a car accident when he was younger, so he was raised by his Aunt Lexi. His parents were slightly wealthy, and being young, they had no will, so all of their money went to him. Kids called him rich, which wasn't entirely wrong, because he had enough money to live on his own, and his Aunt was no slacker.
Jay had invited Casey over at some point during the day, but he couldn't remember when.
His Aunt's house was a three story brick house with a large basement. She owned seven acres of land, and had included water rights to a part of a river that ran through Atlanta, and other towns on the way there. Jay loved spending time in the woods by the river, he fished and hunted. Before his uncle left, the two of them had built a treehouse, and even a boat to ride down the river in.
Jay sighed. He wished Casey would get here soon.Life sure is boring.
