Jay ran through the forest, he could hear someone crashing through the trees behind him. Jay pumped his legs faster. He could see a clearing up ahead. He smiled.

I win!

A large weight shoved him to the ground. He rolled over and was instantly tackled and pinned to the ground. A boy with chestnut hair smiled down at him.

"You lose." Casey said. Jay scoffed and pushed the boy off of him.

"I said a race, not football."

"And I don't listen that well." Casey replied. Both boys stood up and dusted themselves off. Jay set off down a path toward the river, Casey following behind him.

"What are we gonna do now?" Casey asked.

"I don't know. Let's go see the treehouse. It belongs to both of us, you helped me build it, after all."

"Thanks for the that. It gave me something to do, something to look forward to." Casey smiled. "I remember how we met. Way back when."

Jay opened his eyes. His side hurt. He sat up. And knocked heads with a boy about his age.

"You are alive!" The boy exclaimed "The lady told me you were, but I wanted to see. She told me to leave you alone, but when she wasn't looking I snucked in here see?" He was obviously proud of himself.

"Um....ok...." Jay was confused.

"Oh. Maybe you don't remember. My mommy is having a baby in another room." He smiled and looked around the hospital room. " Where's your mommy?"

"I don't know. I...." Then it all came back. The car. The crash. The broken glass. His body, it hurt. The blood, the fire, the screams, the sirens, the hospital, people in white rushing around him, their outfits spattered with red. He remembered a bright light, and then nothing after that.

Jay began to cry, when he remembered his parents were dead. He watched them die, he heard their screams. And Casey was the one that helped him through it.

The doctors told him that his mother protected him with her body. It was such a waste. He wasn't worth it. He had gone numb for weeks after that, Casey stayed in contact, never really leaving him alone. The two grew closer, almost inseparable. They hung out at school, and on most weekends.

As they grew older, friendships around them began to crack and fall apart, but not theirs. They made a promise to never give up on each other, and to always be there. They were an example to others.

Last year, when Casey got dumped by his first real girlfriend, Jay helped him through it. And when she tried to come back and flirt with Jay, he rejected her in favor of Casey. And now here they were.

_____________back to present _______

"Well hello there." A pretty ginger poked her head out of the treehouse window. Casey grinned.

"Hey babe." The ginger flashed a smile.

"What are you doing here Natalie?" Jay asked

"Well." Natalie climbed down the ladder to face them, she stepped over to Casey and wrapped her arms around him. "I came to see you of course."

"I'm fine with that." Casey's grin grew wider.

Jay rolled his eyes, jealous that Casey had someone and he didn't.

"Oh, and by the way, Hailee told me to give this to you." She handed Jay a note. He opened it, read it, tossed it on the ground, and stomped away.

"How rude." Natalie remarked.

"Don't mind him." Casey kissed her forehead and pulled her after him.
