The pain. He could feel it. It was discreet, but it was there. There was something in his arm. Jay reached over and touched it. It was cold and felt weird. He his arm was sore. He opened his eyes and blinked several times. He tried to sit up but was stopped by an incredible rush of pain from his lower abdomen.

Jay clenched his teeth and squeezed his eyes shut until the pain subsides. He opened his eyes again. He was in a hospital room. An IV was embedded in his arm. He hear the door open to his left. A short women with blonde hair that reached her shoulders strode in. She appeared to be a nurse. She stopped abruptly when she saw Jay.

"Your awake." She said, stating the obvious.

"Yeah I know." Jay rasped. His voice sounded dry. It was at this moment he realized how thirsty he was.

The nurse pressed a button on the wall, and picked up a clipboard. "How are you feeling?" She asked, pen ready.

"Tired, dehydrated, and hungry."

"How is the pain?"

"About a 7."

The nurse wrote this down. "Do you know who you are?"

Jay was taken aback by this question, but guessed she was checking for memory loss. "My name is Jay Sager." He replied.

"What year is this?"

"2018." He replied.

The nurse nodded. "Do you know what the date is?"

Jay frowned. "I suppose I don't. I went into town yesterday, which was the eighth of June, so I guess that makes it the ninth?"

The nurse put the pen down. "Jay, you were hit in the stomach with a bullet from a very powerful weapon. You passed out on the sidewalk and have been in a coma for two and a half weeks."

Jay opened his mouth, then closed it. He sat up at some point, but didn't know when.

"Two and a half weeks? Why?"

"Well, the bullet just put you in extreme shock, along with blood loss, etc, and your brain just went into shutdown mode." The nurse explained.

"Ugh." Jay groaned. A knock at the door ripped him from his own self pity.

The door burst open and Lexi barged through the room.

"Jay?" She exclaimed and rushed over and wrapped him in a tight hug. Her squeezing him hurt a lot, but Jay didn't care. "I thought we might lose you." Lexi began to cry hysterically, making Jay uncomfortable.

"It's okay Lex, really."

The next few days went by really slowly. The doctors said he could leave after doing initial checkups, etc. he had plenty of visitors, mostly from school. But one in particular shocked him.

There was a soft knock at the door.

"Come in." Jay called.  The door opened with a creak, and in stepped Hailey. Jay's eyes widened.

"Hi." She grabbed her left arm with her right. Almost as if she was nervous, or just awkward.

"Hi." Jay returned. He could feel the awkwardness in the air.

"When I heard about it... I just.... I was worried."  She looked down. Jay just stared at her as she continued.  " I...don't know..."  Her hair fell, creating a curtain of hair covering her face.

Jay stood up from the bed, and walked over to her. She looked up at him as he took her cheek in his hand. He locked his eyes with her. The two of them stayed like that for a while.

"Yes." Hailey whispered.

"What?" Jay was confused.

"Yes is my answer. Yes, I'll go out with you." Jay smiled and wrapped his arms around her.

" I was hoping you would."

"There's something I want to show you." Hailey took his hand and pulled Jay into the hallway.

Jay followed eagerly,  ignoring the pain that was now just a dull ache. She led him down the hall, and up a flight of stairs. She pushed open the door to the roof. They walked out into the humid night. The Stars glowed all around them. They sat down on the higher edge of the building that led to another part, which had a large h on it, probably for medical helicopters. Jay put his arm around Hailey as the two stared into the night sky.

A cold metal cylinder was pressed against the back of his head. He heard the sound of a pistol being cocked.

"Don't move." A gruff voice said. Jay could hear the click of heels behind him.

"Well lookie who survived. Not for long. Hello Jay."  A female voice purred. "Now let's get this over with."
