Saturday morning Monica was up early and packing her bags out her sister’s house, the movers had already picked up most of her things. Whitney had to work early in the morning but, promised she would stop by the apartment later. Devon was busy working on the funeral arrangements for his mother, and when Monica had time she would call and check up on him and make sure he was taking everything at ease. Grabbing the rest of the boxes out her room she placed them in the trunk, the movers followed behind her in their truck. Pulling up to the apartment she headed up the stairs and unlocked the door, the living room was loaded with boxes she had to unpack. Taking a deep breath in she smiled she had her own place and life was getting better on her end.
“This the last table” one of the movers said, as Monica was unpacking dishes
“Okay thanks, I paid the guy out in the truck have a good day” Monica said standing to close the door. She pulled out her cellphone to call Devon
“Hey Mookie, are you settled in” Devon’s voice answered the phone
“Yes Dee, I’m just unpacking stuff… are you okay” Monica asked
“It’s hard but, all my family is over right now we are alright”
“Is your father there?”
“Yeah baby, but I have to get back to business we will talk later on okay”
“Okay I will talk to you later”
Monica hung up the phone and finished unpacking the dishes; she placed them in the cabinets and began hanging up things. Around eight o’clock Monica had finished up everything she needed, grabbing her some clothes she headed into the shower and styled her hair. In the middle of putting her shirt there came a knock at the door, rolling her shirt down she look through the peep hole and started smiling to see her sister standing outside.
“Hey sissy” Monica said opening up the door
“Hey love, here you go” Whitney said stepping in handing Monica a bag “Girl this apartment is live I ‘m feeling this” Whitney said looking around
“Thanks sis I just, finished putting everything up not too long ago” Monica said locking the door and heading to the sofa where her sister was sitting
“Well you did a good job and I’m proud of you, so how are things with you and Devon”
“We are official now, but the real question is how things went with you and Tank that night”
“Girl went to well , we ended back up at his place”
“Was it good”
“He put it down, but girl tell me why I go over to Tess place the other day and Jordan ass over there in the apartments”
“He was with her “
“No he was standing outside with some guys”
“I don’t even want to talk about him, but look come over tomorrow I really need to go check on Devon” Monica said looking at her phone
“What’s going on with him” Whitney asked standing up
“He is planning his mother’s funeral it’s a hard time for him and I just want to be there for him” Monica said grabbing her purse as the two walked out the front door
“Well tell him I’m sorry for his loss, but I love you Mo take care” Whitney said
“Thanks love and be safe” Monica said hugging her sister bye. Monica walked to her car and drove off , she had not met Devon’s family and this was not the time but she wanted to be there for him no matter what. Knocking on the door of Devon’s apartment he opened and hugged Monica , she walked inside his living room was full of relatives her skin started to tingle she felt like all eyes were on her.
“Everyone this is Monica, my girlfriend” Devon said as his family looked up at them
“Hello everyone” Monica said nervously. His aunts and uncles walked up to her shaking her hand, and giving her hugs his cousins and friends of the family spoke to her and then walked away but, when Devon’s dad spoke to her his voice was as cold as ice and made her uncomfortable . Monica took a seat next to Devon as they all begin to share memories and talk about Devon’s mother; she found it odd that the only person that did not say anything was his dad. The night ended and Monica decided to spend the night with Devon since the next day would be the funeral. The next morning Monica woke up and cooked Devon breakfast, they both got dressed and headed downstairs to the limo to be taken to the church. The car ride was silent Monica didn’t know what to say, she just kissed him and held his hand; he smiled slightly at her and redirected his attention back to the window. Pulling in front of the church they stepped out the limo, the grip in Devon’s hand seem to tighten, as they walked up the steps they were ushered to the front.
After words were spoken they lined up to view the body, tears ran down Devon’s face like never before this was the moment he had been dreading the most. Monica felt tears run down her face, she had not known Devon’s mother but, she was felt sad that he was losing her this way. They walked out the church hand in hand, the limo followed behind the hearse as the police went down the street. Turning into the graveyard they exited the limo, everyone gathered around the burial site and said their last good bye before his mother was buried.
“I love you momma you won’t be forgotten” Devon said placing a rose at her tombstone and walking off to join Monica at the car. They drove off Devon turned to look at Monica , cuffing her cheeks he kissed her and thanked her for being bye his side.
