I wake up and notice it's quiet. A little too quiet. I get up and walk over to the kitchen. "Oh hey Ruby." My family greets me. They are all sitting around eating breakfast.
"Umm hey?" I say confused. Did they forget about my birthday? "Do you know if Melanie is coming over?" I ask them.
"For what?" Stella asks indifferently.
Were these people serious? "Nothing." I say a bit annoyed. I sit down and eat my breakfast quietly. I hear the front door open. "Surprise!" I hear Melanie's voice say as she walks over to me and hugs me. I smile and hug her back. "You didn't forget?"
"Of course we didn't forget. We were just waiting for Melanie." My mom says standing to hug me. My dad and Stella following. "Happy Birthday!" They all say.
"Oh. I have a surprise for you." Melanie says calling someone over.
"Alex!" I say excitedly as my oldest sister walks in. I hadn't seen her since she moved, last year.
"Happy birthday Ruby! Are you ready for your party!"
"Party?" I ask confused.
"Oh yea. You need to get ready. You have 4 hours." Melanie explains.
After eating breakfast, Melanie and Alex take me into the bathroom to do my hair and makeup.
"Do you really have to do all this?" I ask as they work.
"Of course! It's your 16th birthday." Alex says.
"Your not making me wear a dress are you?"
"Not if you don't want to." Melanie reassures me.
I smile. I started wondering about my party. Was their going to be live music? Balloons? Cake? What kind of food was there going to be? Pizza? Oooh pizza! Wait, what about Andy?
"Is Andy going to be there?" I ask hopefully.
"I'm not sure. He said he was going to try to make it. He had some things to do." Melanie explains.
I sigh. Well it was Friday. He was probably at school trying not to miss class so he can graduate. "Wait. I'm not going to go to school?" I ask.
"Nope. Not today. Mom called to tell them you two were sick. Your lucky it's Friday." Alex says.
"Thank you!" I say hugging them both.
A few hours later, we are all ready to go. I walk excitedly to the car. "Where are we going exactly?" I ask.
"You'll just have to wait." Stella says mysteriously.
I roll my eyes at her.
We get to my aunt's venue and see cars parked outside. I look around excitedly. "Who did you invite?"
"Everyone we know." Melanie shrugs getting out of the car.
As soon as we get out the car Alyss and Chris walk over to us a camera in Alyss's hand. "Happy Birthday Ruby!" They both say hugging me.
"Thank you!"
"Okay. Now let's take some pictures of you out here." Alyss says nervously looking at Melanie worriedly.
"Why can't we just go inside?" I ask confused. Alyss looks over at Chris as he nods and walks over to Melanie.
"Well it's so nice out." Alyss explains as Chris walks inside with Melanie.
"What's going on, Alyss?" I asks, annoyance in my voice.
"We aren't ready for you to go in yet." Alyss sighs.
"Why?"
"You two should go inside." Alyss points at Stella and Alex, changing the subject.
They both nod and go inside. "Now. Let's take some pictures." Alyss says pointing the camera at me. I smile unenthusiastically. "Come on give me something to work with."
"Fine." I say smiling.
"Great." Alyss smiles taking more pictures.
Jimmy comes out. "Ready! Hey Ruby, happy birthday!" He says hugging me. He looks over at Alyss and nods.
"Okay, let's go then." She says as I walk in front of them.
As we walk in everyone walks over to me and hugs me wishing me a happy birthday. I look around trying to spot Andy in the crowd.
"He's not here." Melanie whispers in my ear. I look up at her sadly. "It's okay. We have a surprise for you." She says pointing over to the stage.
I look over and notice vampires everywhere on stage ready to play. "Ahh! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!" I say running over to the stage. They all laugh as they follow me over as they start playing.
After they finish their set they come off stage and wish me happy birthday. "Thank you." I smile shyly.
"Ruby! Guess who we found!" Beth walks over excitedly with a beer in her hand.
Andy appears behind her. I gasp. "You came?"
"Of course." He says as everyone walks away giving us some privacy. He strokes my cheek gently as he bends down and kisses me. "Happy birthday my love. I have a present for you." He grabs my hand and pulls me behind the stage for more privacy. He fumbles through his pockets until he finds what he's looking for. He looks at me and smiles.
"Ruby. I have loved you since the first time we met and you have really changed me in a good way." He pauses. "I know we are too young to know about love and maybe I'm stupid for doing this, but I don't care. I love you, Ruby and I hope someday you will want to marry me. But, for now, I want you to have this." He pulls out a small black box and opens it. Inside is a small black ring. I smile up at him a tear escaping my eye. "I know it's not a traditional ring, but I wanted to get you something you would actually wear." He smiles placing the promise ring on my ring finger.
"I love you Andy." I say as I put my arms around his neck kissing him gently on his lips.
"You messed up her makeup." Melanie says angrily walking over.
I laugh.
"Don't laugh I need to fix this. Stay here." Melanie says walking away and getting her purse. She comes back and fixes my makeup. "Okay. Let's go." She says grabbing mine and Andy's arms leading us to the front of the stage where everyone else is dancing.
"I don't want to dance though." I say backing away.
"Oh come on. Just today." Andy pleads as he pulls me toward the dance floor.
