Long Live the King

They always tell us,
That things will get better soon,
That highschool is better than middle school,
That college is better than highschool,
So on and so forth.

Boy, are they fucking wrong.
Everything just gets progressively worse,
To the point where we crumble under the pressure,
When we're afraid because so many have already broken us,
When we've learned not to trust anyone.

And damnit, we're better than that,
Why do we feel the need to destroy others,
Just to build ourselves up?
And why, of all things,
Do we let this happen?

Say you live in a foreign land,
Ruled by a tyrant King,
Who suddenly dies.
All will finally be well with the kingdom.
Oh, wait.

A new king has stepped up,
One who is even worse than before.
But you go on with your life as if nothing happened,
As if this is somehow better.
So what do you do about it?

Nothing.
Absolutely god damn nothing.
Because you think someone else will.
News flash, buddy.
Nobody's coming to save your ass.

So you wait for some miracle,
But nothing will come.
People are being killed right in front of you,
But at least the old King is dead,
So long live the king!

What do you see wrong with that?
Exactly. Just as things are looking bright,
A new darkness comes over,
And nobody does anything about it.
And all is lost.

So why, in this day and age,
When nobody is truly safe,
Do we stay lazy?
Why not lend a hand,
To help someone who's fallen?

And therein lies the truth,
About the world around us.
If every single person in a cave
Lit a small candle,
There would be no darkness.

So, if every person on earth,
Extended their hand to help someone,
Instead of their sword to behead them,
Then maybe, just maybe,
We'd finally be free.
