The day had gone by as usual and the room was filled with the pungent smell of cigarettes. The phone in his hand kept pinging, ignored until it had stopped.

When the fault is in your own stars, who could you possibly blame?

Soham stared at the scorecard with contempt and disdain. It was the result of his first mock test, clearly not satisfactory enough with the marks he'd obtained by bunking classes and sleeping in his hostel room all day.

He threw it in between the pages of a notebook and leaned back on the chair with his eyes closed and a cigarette held in between his teeth.

He hated studying.

Going back to university after completely cutting off his life from studying for years now seemed to be a big mistake. He'd clearly just crossed the borderline of the passing grades. Studying again was probably not in his forte.

"Why do you look so down? Failed or what?" His roomate, Aadarsh Purohit, a senior by one year, asked. Soham shrugged nonchalantly. "I just can't get it into my head."

"I can give you my notes but- you can't share it with anyone else." Aadarsh said after contemplating for a moment. His nose was still scrunched at the smell of the cigarette smoke but he didn't comment on it like always.

"It's not like I have many friends in my class. Don't worry about it. Thanks." Soham passed an appreciative smile, mentally taking a note to not slack off anymore or he was really going to get kicked out of the house if he fails the final semester exam.

Aadarsh whistled while giving a slight nod and arranged his notebooks over his study table, ignoring Soham's existence like he hadn't just had a little conversation with him.

The room was a standard sized hostel room with enough space for two people to share. They have been roommates for about a month and a half now and today was probably the first time Aadarsh had taken the leverage of talking to him first.

Soham threw the half smoked cigarette on the floor and crushed it under the sole of his slipper.

Aadarsh always remains absent from the room mostly during the day so far and comes back only after the evening snacks time of their hostel's mess was over. As for Soham, he has been living like a hermit here. He goes home on the weekends looking fresh and blooming like a flower but the rest of the five days are spent sleeping and gaming.
