"Better to be criticized by a wise person than to be praised by a fool. A fool's laughter is quickly gone, like thorns crackling in a fire. This also is meaningless."
‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭7:5-6‬ ‭NLT‬‬

▪️Serena's POV▪️

"What happened?" I ask frantically.

"I-he..." Her sobs prevent her from making coherent sentences.

I lead her to the couch where Jacob and I weren't sitting and she falls on her side as the tears keep falling. What in the world happened on her date?

"What's wrong?" Jacob whispers as he walks up beside me.

'Go to the kitchen,' I mouth to him.

"Becca," I whisper cautiously, "I'm going to make hot chocolate, do you want some?" I don't care how warm it gets, hot chocolate is always a good enough beverage.

"Yes please." She mutters, hoarsely.

"Do you want whip cream and marshmallows?"

"Just whip cream." She whispers and closes her eyes.

I walk to the kitchen and Jacob is there waiting, while eating a cup of cereal.

"When are you not hungry?"

"When I'm sleeping. Now let's get to the point, what happened to Becca?"

"I don't know for certain, but what I'm guessing is that your best friend messed up on their date."

He swears and looks away, "I'll talk to him. There might be a chance that it was a all a big mistake. He seemed pretty serious about this date, he wouldn't put all his progress down the drain."

"Well if you could talk to him that would be nice." I say as I put the hot chocolate powder into the two mugs and fill them with hot water.

"I will."

I go back to Becca once her hot chocolate is done. When she sees me hold it, she slowly sits up before taking it from my hands.

"Thank you."

"You're welcome." I smile sadly. "I have cookies, if you want any?"

"What kind?"

"Double chocolate chips."

"Please?"

I pat her on the shoulder gently and get off the couch. Going back to the kitchen, Jacob is there while texting.

"Danny asked if I could go to his house so I could hear his side of the story."

"Okay, bye. I had fun today."

"I did too." He kisses me cheek before leaving.

We're getting so comfortable with each other now, I just hope it's actually sincere.

I go back to the living room with a plate of cookies and I sit next to Becca again.

"What happened?" I ask carefully.

She sighs sadly before placing her mug on the coffee table, "The date, was perfect, up until dinner."

"Well what happened before dinner?"

"We played I Spy in the car. He took me to the aquarium. We got to know each other better, and look at all the different kinds of sea creatures. I had so much fun. Then he bought me a plush shark, I was going to name it Bruce."

"Sounds amazing."

"It was." Her voice cracks.

"And the dinner?" I ask tentatively.
