"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."
Proverbs 4:23 NIV🏖Jacob's POV🏖
Five years later (from Back to Routine)
My heart feels like it's attempting to beat out of my chest as I continue to drive to my desired location. Serena's giggles are infectious as she sits beside me, her vision obstructed by the blindfold. My hands get more clammy the closer we get.
"Where are we going?" she asks... for the hundredth time.
I roll my eyes and put one hand on her knee. "You'll find out soon."
"But that's so long away," she whines.
"We're getting close."
She pouts and crosses her arms. Other than her physical complaints, there is nothing verbal coming from her. I bask in the silence, for only a second. I can't believe this is happening. After years of building up a relationship with my Princessa. Through college and rent, arguments and reconciliations. The memories of our best moments in our relationship wash over me in waves. Speaking of waves, the proper 'parking space' comes into view and I cut the engine as I approach it. She giggles again as she takes her seat belt off.
"Wait for me, you can't see."
"I know, I'm just getting ready. So hurry up."
"Yes, Ms. Impatient."
She grumbles inaudible nonsense and I chuckle, getting out of the driver's side and walking over to the trunk. Opening it, I grab the picnic basket, making sure everything is there, and closing it again. The passenger door is open and my Princessa is seated sideways.
"You really don't understand patience today, do you?"
"Not at all, especially when my boyfriend has me blindfolded."
"Remind me of that fact when we're in bed."
"Jacob!" she chastises.
I smirk and take hold of her hand. "Stick close to me, okay?"
"Okay. Should I be worried?"
"Only of tripping if you don't stick close to me."
She frowns and gets one step closer to me. I chuckle and lead us through the familiar path. I pull her a bit to the right as she nearly trips over the root, again. The recognizable crimson and brown rock comes into view and I turn left. A couple more feet, and we walk under the hanging branches, stopping by the vines. As I pull them back and up, I let Serena go first. Her steps are slow and calculated. As we crouch, she begins to giggle. She figured it out. I didn't expect her to not to. We've been here many times and the path has become second nature. The sounds of the waves are prominent now and Serena jumps up and down, kicking her sandals off. I grab her hands to stop her from ripping the blind fold off.
"Not yet," I whisper against her ear.
She shivers and nods, following my lead as I walk us over to the pre-made picnic blanket. I put the basket down and gently sit her down parallel to it. I sit next to her, adjusting the vase full of carnations so the blooms face her. Reaching behind her head, I untie the knot, carefully so to not pull her hair. Once she's regained her sight, she gasps. She turns to me and attaches her lips to mine. The nervous feeling within lessens as she holds my face gently, running her thumb across my cheekbones gently. Detaching ourselves, she rests her head on my shoulder.
"Our anniversary is in a month, what's this for?"
I chuckle and open the basket to take out the wine and two glasses. "I can't spoil my girlfriend to a fancy, reclusive date?"
