My heart lies in tatters on the floor. I've really messed it up this time. I've lost him. I've lost Glen. I told him I loved him, and he walked away. He just walked away.
“Glen!” I scream after him. Maybe if he hears my voice, maybe if I can convince him...
Convince him what, Danny? That it was a mistake? That you didn't actually want to do that? That you don't actually love him? That wouldn't be true. You love that man more than life itself, so what right have you got to call him back in here and tell him lies?
All I can do is scream. Scream out the regret, the humiliation, the anger. Scream through my body-wracking sobs. Scream out his name until my throat is raw, the tears have dried up and there is simply nothing left in me. At that point, I just hang there, defeated and empty.
The sound of footsteps penetrate my depression but I don't look up. What's the point any more? As they come to a halt in front of me, I silently hope that they spare me any more disgrace, turn around and leave me here to rot. But I'm not that lucky.
“I'm sorry, Danny.”
She's back. Of course she's back. I should have known she would be here to see me like this.
“You may not believe me right now, but I truly am sorry. I didn't want that to happen.”
“You saw it all then?” My voice is unrecognisable. There's no life in it at all. I'm the shell of a person I used to be. Dead.
“I had to make sure that you wouldn't hurt him.”
“I wouldn't hurt him.”
“Yes you could, Danny. You already have. You know that.”
“I don't remember...”
“I still had to make sure.”
“Why did you bring him here?”
“Have you not figured it out yet, Danny?” I shake my head. “It's Glen.”
“What's Glen?”
“Your trigger. The reason you lose control. All of this is because of Glen.”
I feel my head lift up slowly to look at her. She's right. My God, she's right. Now that I actually think about it, it's always him that I think of before I...
I want to cry some more, but I literally have nothing left. No energy, no tears, no nothing. That makes this all the worse.
“He's gone.” I don't know why I say that. I just need to hear it out loud.
“Not for good.”
“How d'you know that?”
“Because I talked to him.” A whimper leaves my lips and I look away. “I can't tell you what he told me in full, but I can tell you that he is very scared for you.”
“Does...does he know...”
“Yes.” My heart sinks. “I had to tell him. You know I did.”
I nod. Deep down, I knew that he would have to find out eventually.
“He's very confused. It's a lot of information to take in. Everything that I told him today, and then what's just happened with you. You have to understand how hard this is for him. Give him some time. He'll come back for you. You haven't lost him, Danny. I can promise you that.”
Our eyes meet again and I make a decision.
“Help me,” I whimper, and I see her face soften. “Please, Doctor. Please help me.”
“I'll do my damnedest to get you through this,” she says to me with determination. “And my name is Madison.”
