Casey
It's been a couple of weeks since the whole 'gang' thing. I had picked up my normal lifestyle again and was able to stay home by myself, after forcing Jack to go out and do stuff. Jack had managed to get a normal job so he would be able to take care of both Alex and I. I thought about getting a job as well, but I couldn't leave Alex with someone else, it hurt too much.
I placed Alex on his blanket as he played with the stuffed animals Jack had bought him. I fell into deep thoughts all of a sudden, which happened quite a lot when I was alone with Alex. Nate popped into my mind once again. He hadn't contacted any of us ever since he safely brought Jack and I home. I hadn't had the chance to thank him properly for saving my life.
I grabbed my phone from the coffee table and scrolled through my contacts list. I stopped when I saw Nate's name and hesitated before pushing the dial button. I put it on speaker and waited for Nate to answer the phone call. After three rings, I was about to hang up when I suddenly heard his voice.
"Hello?"
"Hi, Nate, it's me," I spoke up, surprised he had answered the call.
"Casey, how are you doing?" Nate asked as if he actually cared. Afterall he cared enough to save my life, so why did this surprise me?
"I'm actually doing fine, what about you?" I returned the question, genuinely interested in how he was doing. I had no idea what he was up to or where he was.
"I'm okay, but why did you call me?" Nate asked, immediately assuming I had called him for a certain reason.
"You kind of left after you brought Jack and I home that day. I didn't get the chance to talk to you properly, because I was processing all the new information you'd given-" I was cut off by Nate calling my name.
"I think it's better if we continue our lives like before, without each other," Nate pointed out, making it clear that he didn't want to meet up or even talk. I was taken back by his demand, but there was no other option than to accept it.
"At least let me thank you, I mean you've saved my life, if you weren't there I wouldn't have been here right now," I said, but it was dead silent on the other side. I sighed, understanding Nate's point, "I'm sorry for all the misery I've caused you Nate," I apologised, not only referring to him saving my life, but to our short relationship as well. I shouldn't have led him on, knowing Jack was still in the game.
"I have forgiven you a long time ago, Casey. You and Jack are meant to be, don't let anyone or anything break the bond between you guys... Take care, Case," Nate said before ending the call. A shiver ran through my body when I heard him use my nickname. I couldn't help but sigh deeply, which made Alex laugh at me. For the first time in a long time, a genuine smile appeared on my face as I looked down on my son.
"What a beautiful view," I heard behind me and turned around to see Jack standing in the doorway. I stood up and embraced him in a hug as I pecked his lips, "Is that all I get?" Jack asked, holding me againts his body with one arm. I leaned in closer and gave him a more passionate kiss, "I missed this, the intimate moments. I can't believe I nearly lost you," Jack mumbled against my lips as he looked into my eyes.
It stunned me how much Jack and I had been through, yet we always ended up with each other. If anyone would have told I'd end up marrying Jack and having a baby with him I would have thought they were insane.
But the fact that we were still together after all the misery, made me believe that happy endings do exists. If you're meant to be, you're going to end up together, no matter the obstacles.
"If it's meant to be, it will be."
