My morning run went as usual, quite and by myself. I hesitated when I passed Fiona’s house but kept running because didn’t want to remember what was. I ran home, changed into some baggy clothes and grabbed a glove and a ball.
I got down to the field before anybody else. I wasn’t surprised considering it was before noon.
I went towards the back of the field and started throwing the ball at the fence. It was a warm up most coaches used when they had an odd number of players. The ball could go in any direction so when you threw it you had to be ready for anything.
I was fine after about twenty minutes of throwing and receiving the ball. I headed to the dugout where coaches have buckets upon buckets filled with baseballs. I grabbed a bucket and headed towards the mound.
I started throwing balls over home plate as if I someone was there. I started off simple with some heat and change ups. After I warmed up and felt comfortable I started throwing some sliders and then started working on my curveball.
After I had thrown through the entire bucket and I went to go pick them up I noticed there was someone in the bleachers.
“Hey!” I said trying to start a conversation. I had no idea who this was but I figured it would be nice.
“Hi,” I barely heard a soft voice say.
“You want to come down and play catch or something?” I asked politely.
“No thanks. I’d rather just watch,” I heard the voice a little better this time. I was expecting it to be someone I knew messing with me but instead, it was a girl I have only met a few times.
“Are you sure?” I asked trying to get her to come down.
“I’m positive. Thanks,” she responded.
I shrugged it off and went back to picking up the balls that were on the ground. I filled the bucket and went back to the mound where I did it all over again. This went on for about a half hour before I looked back up to see if she was still there. Instead of her being gone like I expected, she had friends! They were watching me like I was some one man show freak or something.
“If any of you guys would like to come down you are more than welcome,” I told them.
I waited to see if anyone of them were going to take me up on it. I wasn’t really expecting anyone to which is why I jumped a little when one of them got up and came down.
“Cool, do you want to bat, or play catch or something-“I didn’t finish asking before the person finally got onto the field. I immediately regretted asking any of them to come down. As soon as she took her hoodie off I realized who it was.
Fiona.
“Hi,” I said awkwardly.
She turned to everyone and waved. As soon as she did this they all left. She turned back to me and calmly said, “I’d like to talk”.
“Well, I’m not going anywhere, go ahead,” I told her.
“About the other day,” she started. “Umm. I honestly don’t know where to start. I was wrong. I want you in my life and I don’t want to deal with things alone. You helped me realize that I can do it on my own but that I don’t need to. You have shown me that just because things are tough, doesn’t give you the right to stop trying. Because of you I haven’t cut in almost three months and the thought of cutting scares me. I am not at home as much as I used to because I went out and got more friends. These people care for me which is why they showed up today. I guess what I’m really here to say is that I’m sorry and that I really miss you”.
I must have sat there in shock for a while because after what felt like a half of a minute she tapped me lightly and asked me if I was ok.
“Yea I’m fine,” I said confidently. “I just wasn’t expecting to see you any time soon is all. I really thought what you meant what you said back at the hospital is all. I was trying to clear my mind off of things and you coming down here just caught me off guard is all.”
She had began picking up baseballs off of the ground so I did the same. It was quiet for a short moment before she stopped.
“What’s the matter?” I asked.
She walked over to me and I looked up into her eyes. They were beautiful like always.
“Robert” her voice trailed off.
We stared into each other’s eyes for a moment before either of us did anything. I went to move and before I knew it Fiona had taken my hands and locked our fingers together.
“Fiona,” I said.
She quickly cut me off. She leaned in and the next thing I knew, I was kissing Fiona and she was doing the same. I felt as if something that was misunderstood and confusing had just been solved. I felt as if I had my loving girlfriend back.
