I walked inside and set my stuff down on the couch before my mom walked in and wrapped her arms around me.

“Oh my God,” she said. ”I can’t believe you’re here!”

“What do you mean?” I asked skeptically.

“The doctor said you were in a coma and it could be years before you woke up,” she mumbled softly.

“Is that why the only person there when I woke us was Fiona?” I asked harshly. “Is it because you thought I wasn’t going to make it?”

I was boiling over with anger now.

“I get knocked out by a baseball and have a concussion that put me into a coma for a few days. You don’t even have the decency to come and wait with hope for a few days like Fiona did?” I continued.

By this time my mother was in tears and I wasn’t even sorry. How much nerve can a woman have? She didn’t even wait a week before giving up hope. This angered me and then I remembered the kiss I just had and everything else faded. I ran up to my room ignoring my mother. I was hoping to see the little green light from my Huawei blinking. Sure enough it was blinking green as if someone had text me. I instantly started praying for it to be from Fiona and when I looked down I was relieved to see that it was. I quickly swiped my phone over to read the text.

“I’m home <3” the text read.

“Well that’s good to hear” I sent back. “I hope I didn’t make things awkward by kissing you” I continued on. “You are just so beautiful that I couldn’t help myself” I finished.

Shortly after I sent the text I got a response.

“You didn’t make anything awkward” she said. “It just caught me by surprise. Once I realized what was going on I couldn’t help but kiss you back. The only thing you did today besides get better was make me happy”.

The only thing I could think of saying besides I love you was that I was speechless and I figured it was too early to say I love you. I set my phone down on my bed as it was charging before realizing that I was still in my baseball uniform. I went to the bathroom and took a quick shower with cold water. Yes cold water. I’m a freak, now get over it. I dried myself off and changed into something comfortable.

As I was walking into my bedroom I saw my phone was blinking again so I hurried over and swiped it over.

“I need to tell you something” she said.

I quickly responded with “I was in the shower, sorry. You can tell me anything though. I hope you know that.”

No longer than a minute passed before my phone went off.

“The day you went into the hospital” it trailed off. “I was so worried that you weren’t going to be okay that I kind of cut myself. What’s worse is it isn’t just one cut Rob. It’s over half a dozen.”

“I can’t really do much over the phone, do you want to go somewhere and talk about it” I asked.

“I would like that. How about Pizza Heaven” she asked.

Before I could respond she sent another text saying it was on her. No ifs, ands, or buts. I told her I would meet her there and changed into something that looked nicer. As I got there she was already sitting down and had our food and drinks at the table.

“Well look at miss speedy Gonzalez over here,” I said jokingly.

“Hi,” she said uneasily.

“Would you mind if I saw them?” I asked as I looked at her arms.

She pulled her sleeves up and handed me her wrist. I counted the scars. There were nine of them. Not knowing what else to do and wanting to make her feel better, I kissed each one delicately.  Instead of pulling her arm away like I thought she was going to she let me kiss her scars.

“What was that for?” she asked confused.

“It’s a kiss for each time you have cut that I can see, and for each time I hope you don’t do it again,” I told her.

“Tell me,” she said. “Why do you care about me?”

“Honestly,” I said. “You are worth caring about. Everything about you screams special. Then there is your beauty and intelligence. Also I care about you because you were there for me when nobody else was.”

I looked up in time to see tears stream down her face. I felt terrible until I saw that she was smiling. When she finally looked up, I leaned in and I kissed her again. For the rest of the date we talked and we kissed. Finally I walked her home and gave her a goodnight kiss.

“Goodnight beautiful,” I said to her at last.

“Goodnight, and thanks. For everything,” she stumbled over her words.

“It was nothing,” I told her.

“It was to me. Thank you,” she responded

“Anytime,” I told her. Then she gave me a kiss goodbye and went inside.

I started walking home and everything was fine until my phone started acting up. I got home and turned it off and back on and when I had a few messages. It was just some friends asking if I was ok. Then there was one from Fiona. Not caring about anyone but Fiona, I quickly read what her text said.

“I love you” the text read.
