"Alicia!" my little sister broke me from my tranquil state, I was happily listening to music whilst blocking out the world. I took out one of the earphones and glared at her. At only four years old she always managed to get her point across. "What?" I asked, getting more annoyed by the second. "You need to take me to the park" she said, whilst tapping her foot - adamant to get her way. "Fine! Just let me get ready, alright?" I was seriously really annoyed by now, not knowing why it had to be me that had to take her. She grinned and ran out of my room again.
I sighed as I unplugged my earphones and rested them on the table, and played the music out loud as I reluctantly walked over to the wardrobe, realising I had to get properly dressed, out of the comfortable pyjama bottoms I was currently rocking. As I was staring at the rail of clothes, my laptop sprang into life and beeped a familiar sound. After rushing over and accepting the call, I braced myself for what was probably going to be the best conversation i'll have for the next four days.
"Hiiiiii!" our trademark greeting rang through my laptop's speakers. I saw a beaming James staring at me, head resting on hands. I returned the greeting, and couldn't help but also take on the same smile. "How's touring?" I asked, whilst holding up two necklaces, deciding between them. I don't go out much, so when I do - normally by my family or by James - I put in the effort. "It's really cool, but i'm missing home comforts" he replied with a sigh. "By home comforts you mean the fact I literally cook everything for you?" I asked with an accompanying chuckle. "Canteen food just isn't the same" he replied with a dramatic sigh.
I got up and walked over once again to the wardrobe. I spun back around and was about to ask for James' opinion before I realised the obvious. "If I ask what you think I should wear, you'll say the most awful combination won't you?" once the question was asked the response was in the form of hysterical laughter. "Oh Alicia you see right through me" I smiled and picked out an outfit to change into before heading to the park.
"You've not got any more added gigs have you?" I asked hopefully, two weeks had been long enough, and four days were still to go. "As if i'd do that to you" he said with a reassuring smile. "Alicia!" my little sister shouted before barging in once again. "I told you, stay out until i'm ready!" I shouted at her, and instead she ran up to the laptop. "James!" she squealed and he laughed and waved. I buried my face in my hands and practically died of the upcoming embarrassment. "Evie if you say anything.." I mumbled loud enough for her to hear. But in her four year old mind, she thought it was no big deal.
"Alicia's been saying how much she loves you!" she blurted out, and I screamed into my hands. James and I hadn't said it to each other yet, so this was just perfect. "Has she now?" James asked, and I looked up and he had a raised eyebrow. "Okay Evie out we go" I said as I ushered her out of the room. I then decided to end the call as quickly and smoothly as possible and then even more reluctantly than before headed to the park.
As Evie ran around the playground with some other kids she literally just met I sighed and tried to relax on the uncomfortable park bench. After realising it was impossible I went and stood against a nearby lampost and waited until Evie was too tired to function, but today she seemed to have unlimited energy. "Evie be careful!" I called to her as she began spinning really fast on the roundabout. She waved me off and I returned to my leaning position.
It was piercingly cold, and I regretted not putting on a scarf or something. As I shivered for around the thousandth time, I felt some arms wrap around me. My first thought was one of fear, but then after my captor spoke to me, my heart rate was allowed to slow down. "You really shouldn't be standing alone, bad things happen that way" James' voice spoke softly into my ear, and I couldn't help but smile. "When your sister leaves you for kids she just met you're not left with much choice" I replied with a small laugh. I was then spun around to face him, and I couldn't do anything but keep smiling. "Why are you even here? You're supposed to be on tour" I told him, and he shook his head. "Local gig, we're playing five minutes away" he informed me, and I wrapped my arms around his neck. "I'm so, so happy about that, but it's obvious you can't stay away" I joked and he laughed.
"Aint that the truth" he responded, and I was suddenly very conscious of how close we actually were. A million thoughts were running through my mind, but I pushed them to one side. "And if it's any consolation, I love you too" he added, before leaning in a tiny bit further and our lips connected.
Suddenly I wasn't so bothered about Evie hurrying up anymore..
