It was the last day of the academic year before Christmas break. Everyone was in festive clothing, and I found it amazing, with Christmas being my favourite time of the year. Everyone - including me - was watching the clock in every classroom they were in, waiting for the larger hand to hit 3. I was stuck in Drama, and although I loved it, there's only so many times you can act out the exact same Nativity scene without it getting boring.
Finally, the time arrived. As soon as the hand hit 3, tons of alarms went off on people's electronic devices. Some were standard alarm tones, some were personalised songs. Either way, I found it hilarious. We had all agreed to set an alarm for quarter past four, when the day officially ended, to start the beginning of our well-deserved break. My alarm was set to play Ed Sheeran - unsurprisingly, and as soon as his voice filled my ears I couldn't help but smile again. Then, I set off to meet my best friend Meg, and we would walk home together.
"Aliciaaaa! It's Christmasss!" Meg extended every syllable in every word in her greeting. "I knowww!" I replied, and we both laughed. Then, we began the journey home. As we were mindlessly chatting, on the opposite side of the road two of the boys from our year, Brad and Connor - did I mention I had the hots for Connor? I meant to - were also beginning their walk home. "Alicia! Meg!" they called, causing us to turn around and halt our conversation. They then ran across the road to walk alongside us, kind of.
"Don't blow this for me Al" Meg whispered before we separated so Meg was walking with Brad and I was walking with Connor. Fun. I always freeze in this situation. "They're really something aren't they" Connor chuckled from beside me, and nodded his head towards the other two people in front of us, who were laughing and joking like an actual couple. I simply nodded, knowing no functioning sentences would leave my mouth during this probably one-way conversation. "He really likes her, you know" he added, and I looked towards Meg, who now had her head on Brad's shoulder. "Just like you like Alicia!" Brad suddenly shouted back, and I blushed, attempting to bury my face in my scarf.
I looked up to Connor, who was red faced prior to this being said, and he was laughing. Of course. "No I don't! Me and Al are just besties!" he shouted to Brad, and wrapped an arm around my shoulders, pulling me in for a friendly hug. "Besties, that's us" I mumbled, and soon realised we had arrived at my street.
I quickly hugged Meg and Brad goodbye, but was wary of doing so to Connor, I mean I had no idea what I felt anymore. That sentence back there.. it stung. Really bad. I had no chance to debate it, because a whine came from in front of me, and Connor had his arms outstretched and was pouting. "Don't I get one?" he whined, and I - still reluctantly - hugged him. "Besties get longer okay" he said whilst I was enveloped in his arms, and I made a muffled sound of agreement, with me being crushed against his chest it was hard to speak, obviously.
Fifteen minutes later, I was back at home, surrounded by festivity. Usually I would be practically jumping off the walls at this time, but I couldn't get into the spirit. Connor's words were still whizzing around my head. The news interrupted my thoughts, with a breaking news story. "We are currently suffering the worst blizzard the country has seen in the past thirty years" the newsreader informed the nation, and I wondered how long i'd been wallowing in self pity. It wasn't that long since I was walking home with clear skies and streets.
I contemplated getting up and strolling to the living room window to see how bad the snow was myself, but I decided to stay in this sorry state for longer. My mother and sister were in the kitchen baking gingerbread men, and my father was in his study upstairs, so nobody else was around to answer the door when there was a knock on it. "Mummmmmmmm!" I yelled, and there was no answer. "Mum says go and get it yourself" my sister informed me from the doorway. "Tell her thanks" I replied sarcastically, and my sister skipped back into the kitchen to deliver the information.
I slowly opened the door to reveal Connor. His skin paler than ever and the dainty snow tangled in his styled hair. "Sorry did you forget something, or" I said without thinking. Nice one Alicia, what, where and when could he have forgot something? I internally scolded myself, and Connor laughed. "Um, no. I came to tell you something, actually" he bit his lip after saying this. "Do you not want to come inside? It's freezing out here Con" I replied, frankly proud I could respond normally. He shook his head, and exhaled. "Brad was right" he simply said, then locked our gazes. I racked my brain, and finally clicked on to what he meant. I hoped it was what I thought, everything would be okay that way. Cliche but so, so true.
"Oh.. Wh-Why now?" I managed to stutter (goodbye normal speech). He bit his lip again, and I noticed my neighbours beginning to peep out of their windows to glance at the boy stood on my doorstep in the middle of a blizzard. "I vowed to myself last year that I would tell you before Christmas" he revealed, and he was looking more nervous with every passing second. "Do you not.." he continued after a few seconds, and I shook my head rapidly. I was just trying to process the information in all honesty.
He began to shuffle his feet awkwardly, and I inched ever closer to him (which didn't take too long). The snow was now falling all around us at every angle, and it was the perfect setting, if you ask me. I wrapped my arms around his neck and leaned in closer and closer until our lips were moving in sync.
Christmas movie moments had nothing on us.
