"There's no way i'm getting in the ocean, you should know that by now!" I complained as I batted Bradley's arms away as he tried to pick me up. "Please Hannahhh!" he whined whilst sticking his bottom lip out like a child that wasn't getting its way. "If you want to go in then go ahead, i'll watch from over here" I attempted to compromise, but it was greeted with a head shake. "No, that's not good! I want you to come in with me!" he whined again, and I placed my sunglasses back over my eyes. "It doesn't work like that my friend. You know i'm not going in" I told him one last time. I laid back down and attempted to sunbathe, only to have the sunlight blocked almost immediately afterwards.
"Dude.." I moaned, and reluctantly lifted up my sunglasses. "Pleaseeeeee" he begged another time. "Buy me an ice cream first, then i'll think about it" I tried to be convincing in my tone, and it must have paid off. "Yay! I'll be back soon!" was the response, before he went bounding towards the food stand at the other end of the beach. I waited until I noticed a few more people queue up behind him and knew I was safely out of his view, then made my escape. "See you at home love" I said quietly before picking up my towel and beach bag and scurrying to a local seaside cafe, a safe distance from where we were before, but still close enough to enjoy the sea air.
After enjoying a light meal I then had to decide how to avoid Bradley for the rest of the day, because if we reunited, it was sure to end in a bad way - for me. I cautiously checked each side of the cafe before walking across the street into some shops, and aimlessly strolled around them. Once I had got bored of window shopping with no intent of buying, I was thrown straight into another activity. "Excuse me miss, can you help me? I lost my mummy on the beach" a voice came from in front of me, but I saw nobody. Up until I looked down and a little girl - probably aged five or six - was looking back up at me. "Um, of course, let's go right now" I replied, and she took my hand as we walked back over to the beach.
I looked around warily before stepping foot on the golden sand, and saw no sign of Bradley, not even at the food stand anymore. The little girl tugged at my arm, wanting me to follow her onto the beach in pursuit of her mother. "Can you see her anywhere honey?" I asked her, as we both rapidly swung our heads whilst looking for her, even though I had no idea who I was looking for exactly.
We spent a while searching for the girl's mother, and I was busy searching that it didn't occur to me where we ended up. In the middle of the beach, where I was only a short while before. "Yes, I see her!" the girl squealed and dragged me over to where a few people were standing in a group. Two people immediately wrapped the little girl into a hug, and suddenly I was wrapped into one too. "Caught you" Bradley whispered in my ear. Damn.
"Um.. how?" I asked, trying to not draw on the bigger picture. "Neighbours, family friends. You think I don't know when you try to escape Biggy B?" he replied with a soft laugh. "We're sorry Hannah!" the little girl said, and I couldn't help but smile. "Please don't, please!" I begged as I was placed over his shoulder and he set off for the ocean. "You have to learn these things my dear" he responded.
Despite all my pathetic efforts to break free and my constant begging/squealing, he continued straight into the ocean. I was still in my cover up dress, and even though I informed him of this, it didn't stop him.
Once he entered the watery surface, he carried in up until about stomach length. Then he placed me down on my feet, and I shivered and squealed again. "I'm never going to forgive you for this" I whispered, incapable of normal speech volume. Keeping in mind I was shorter than he was, so the water was further up on me, I was allowed to freak out.
"Okay Hannah, listen to me" he began, and placed his hands on my shoulders, and then reassuringly rubbed them up and down my arms. "I'll never let anything or anyone cause you any pain in any way. And if there's ever a possibility of that happening, know i'll do everything in my power to keep you out of harm's way" he concluded, and it was hard to stay mad. Incredibly hard.
A kiss was then shared in the middle of the ocean, and I didn't feel as terrified as I once did.
As cliche as it sounds, I wouldn't change a word or a second of it for the world.
