"Come on Katieee! It counts for our volunteering hours, and it'll be funnnn!" my best friend Tristan begged for the sixteenth time. He was trying to get me to agree to be on the college's 'Christmas council'. Yes, it was that kind of place.
Basically, the Christmas council were in charge of decorating the college for the festive period, and although I loved Christmas just as much as Tris did, I wasn't overly keen on staying behind countless nights to get all the decorations up. But, as he said, it counts as volunteering hours, which means more free time. "Fine, go and sign us up" I admitted defeat, and Tristan happily bounded off to the other end of the atrium to where the sign up boards were. I rolled my eyes at his childishness, and went back to working on my coursework.
Around ten minutes later, he returned to our table, and had the biggest grin plastered on his face. "What did you sign me up for" I groaned, knowing the sparkle in his eyes all too well. "We have to go fetch the decorations from the garden centre" he revealed, never losing the grin. "I can't go now, I have all this" I replied, and gestured to the numerous textbooks, notebooks and writing utensils spread out messily across the table for all my different subjects. "I'll take the blame if you fail.. which you won't" he told me, then scooped everything up in one huge swing and began walking out of the room with all my stuff, various pens and pencils dropping as he walked.
I hastily threw my bag on my back and muttered to myself as I picked up all the stuff Tristan had dropped during his travels as I followed him. Once I caught up with him - which took a while, considering I had to pick up practically the whole contents of my pencil case off of the floor - he was leaning against the gates, smirking at me. "I really don't like you sometimes" I mumbled, and he laughed. "You love me" he simply replied. still smirking.
Soon enough one of the teachers came strolling towards us, and stopped in front of us. "Here's all the budget for the decorations this year" they told us, and shoved some money into both of our hands. "Don't blow it all like last year's council did" they added before strolling back into the college building. As soon as they were out of earshot, we burst into helpless laughter, as we often did. "We'd best go before it gets too busy" I suggested, and off we went.
As soon as we walked into the seasonal decorated garden centre, I was immediately in awe. Countless Christmas trees with snow tipped branches, festive characters in a physical form, millions of twinkly fairy lights, everything Christmassy in one place. How I was going to choose just some of this stuff and still stay on or under budget? A lot of the decision making will be left to Tris, I tell you now. "Let's get goingggggggg!" he extended every syllable as he grabbed my hand and dragged me deeper into the winter wonderland.
Fifteen minutes later, we had spent just under half of our budget, on only two things. "Which one?" I asked whilst holding two sets of Christmas window stickers, one in each hand. "Ummmmm.. both!" he decided, and I shook my head. "We can't have both, we need to spread this budget out, I mean we're decorating the whole college here" I said in my most serious voice, and it apparently paid off. "You're right. Let's try over here" then off we went into yet another section.
Okay, I honestly do not like Tristan anymore. So much stress is being caused by this stupid trip. I'm close to giving up, so close. "Okay Katie, this one?" he asked with a sigh. "I genuinely do not care anymore Tris, I just want to go" I replied, and he put down the object he was holding. "There's a thing I want to show you, come here!" he suddenly cried out and grabbed my hand again and dragged me to another room.
This room was full of small Christmas trees, and a sprinkler was releasing fake bubbly snow to give the effect of snow tipped branches. The nicest trimmed tree was positioned on a platform at the very back of the room, with a spotlight shining down on it. I was dragged up to stand in front of the tree, and a split second later Tristan was stood opposite me. The bubbly snow was landing all over me, slowly blurring my vision of him as a few pieces landed on my eyelashes (luckily it wasn't the dangerous kind). "It's our fake midnight" he suddenly whispered, and I was immediately confused what was going on. I then cast a glance down at my watch, and saw it was midday. Following this rememberance, I then recalled how much Tris loves - strangely - those cheesy New Year's movie scenes, where the couple admit their love just as the clock strikes midnight to signify a new year.
As I was processing a suitable reply, I was interrupted with a pair of warm, soft lips placed on mine. "I'm sorry, i've wanted to do that since last year" he whispered again, with a nervous laugh. "Just.." I couldn't even produce a functioning sentence, I just craved that sensation again. I needed it.
And we stayed in that amorous position for what seemed like absolutely ages, with the artificial drizzle of snow dancing around us.
