Imagine Thirteen - Rudolph (Brad)

It was Christmas Eve, and Brad and I were having a cosy night in, preparing for the hectic day that would proceed in just a few hours. The flat we shared was dressed in decorations from top to bottom (technically room to room but you get my drift) and the tree stood prominent in the corner of the room, just centimetres from making contact with the ceiling. But it was perfect to me, everything right now was perfect. Cliche, but true.

I was laid on Brad's chest and his arm was draped lazily around me, and we were watching every Christmas special of our favourite tv shows ever made, and even the old humour still made me crack up. Suddenly, a rhythmic tone intertwined with the voices from the tv, and I heard Brad swear quietly then get his phone out of his pocket in almost light speed to stop the sound, and apologised to me with a gentle kiss on my forehead.

He began tapping on his phone for a fair few minutes, and I just found a way to split my attention between both Brad and the Christmas special on the tv, and admittedly I was proud of myself for pulling it off. "The boys say they'll be around at about ten tomorrow morning" he informed me, and I nodded in response, I was gradually getting more and more tired, and forming actual functioning sentences seemed a huge task for me at this moment in time.

The next thing I knew the room was only alight with the glow of the multicoloured fairy lights on the tree, the tv was off and so were the normal ceiling lights. More noticeably, I was now alone. "Brad?" I called, accompanied by a yawn, I had obviously dropped off sometime and a few things had changed. Nice one Izzy, that's not obvious. I was anticipating what to do since I had received no response, and was just about to take the first step and get up, before a figure entered the room.

My first emotion was fear, I was afraid of the figure, but once I noticed the mop of not-so-curls, I immediately relaxed and internally scolded my paranoid mind. "Did I wake you love? I'm sorry" he apologised with a look of sorrow as he sat back down beside me. "No, I woke up a few minutes ago, I was just wondering where you'd got to" I replied with a smile, which he returned. "Have you checked what time it is?" he asked a follow up question with a grin, and I looked at him with a raised eyebrow. Nevertheless, I reached for my phone which was beside me and unlocked it, immediately being told it was three minutes past midnight.

I couldn't help but smile to myself, it was officially Christmas. Finally. As I turned back to face Brad, he held a piece of mistletoe above and between our heads, and I laughed at his predictability. "So you're actually going to do this every day in December?" I asked, and he nodded rapidly.

After fulfilling the universally accepted actions associated with mistletoe, I literally could not stop smiling, no matter how much I tried. "Okay can I get your first present now?" Brad asked eagerly, eyes shining. "If you want to, or we can wait until the others get here" I replied, and laughed at his reaction. "No no no, nowwwww" he ran out of the room and into another, the furthest one away from the one I was in. I waited and sat patiently, and did so up until I heard a huge crash sound from the other end of the flat. "Are you okay?" I shouted over to him, much too loud for the time of night. "I'll be there in a minute Iz! Just stay there!" he shouted back and I did so.

Around ten minutes later, Brad came back into the room with a medium sized colourful box. "Here you go babe" he said to me as he handed me the box. I took it and placed it on my lap. It was quite heavy, and I couldn't lie and say I wasn't extremely intrigued.

I carefully lifted up the lid of the box and the first thing I saw was a pair of antlers, which made me giggle. I then peered over the top of the box, and saw a ton of fluffy golden fur. I gasped, and looked over to Brad, who was grinning from ear to ear. I lifted the contents of the box out and gasped again. In my hands was a tiny little golden puppy, with novelty reindeer antlers on. "Brad, I.. I don't know what to say.." I couldn't function sentences again, I was too busy focusing on the puppy sitting on my hands. "Do you like him?" he asked inquisitively, and I nodded slowly, in a state of disbelief he thought otherwise. "What's his name?" I asked in rebuttal, noticing the puppy's blank collar tag.

"I was kind of thinking Rudolph" he replied, and I nodded again. "It's perfect, just like his new dad" I stated, and Brad leaned in for another kiss, which I more than happily returned. The next few hours were spent playing with Rudolph, and time few so fast none of us even noticed the other three boys enter the flat. It wasn't until Connor announced he wanted Christmas dinner that either of us took our attention off of Rudolph or each other.

I dare to say it'll be like that forever onwards now.
