Pixel slowly opened her eyes. "What time is it?" she wondered in her mind. The door creaked open. There was a slight bit of light coming through the open door. Dell quietly stepped in. Even though there was little light,Pixel could see the obvious blush on his face. "Wonder what happened," she thought. Dell walked toward Pixel's bed. She immediately closed her eyes. Pixel heard Dell sigh. He was right over her bed.
"You can access the roof from District thirteen's floor of you want. Just be extra quiet," he said. He laughed. "If only you had been in the elevator with me,". He combed through Pixel's short hair for a while, then got up and laid back down in his bed. It wasn't long until Pixel heard his soft snore which assured her he was asleep.
"What could've happened in the elevator?" she wondered to herself. Pixel shrugged and tried to go back to sleep. Tried. No matter what Pixel tried though, she couldn't fall back asleep. Pixel finally got out of bed and headed through the hall to the elevator. She pushed the "13" button on the elevator wall. The doors closed silently. It was so dark in the elevator. It's not that it didn't have light,it was just all around her was dark. The doors quickly slid open and Pixel stepped out on the thirteenth floor. Pixel blew a low stream of air. "Little light," she whispered. The tips of her hair lit up. Pixel smiled, satisfied. This was one of the few perks of the chemical accident. Pixel made her way through the hall. The walls were painted with extravagant colors. It sorta made since for the nuclear District. There was a door at the end of the hall. The door was ajar and stairs could be seen inside. Pixel assumed it was the way up to the roof. She gently shut the door behind her after entering so no one would no she was up here unless they actually looked. There was a greenhouse like dome around the entrance. The door to go outside also stood open. "Is someone else out here?" she thought, considering going back to the room. Pixel shook her head. She wasn't heading back now. She went out the door silently. The breeze felt wonderful! The howling of the wind. The smell of the city. It was...perfect. At least, it was. Until Pixel noticed a boy standing by a railing. "Oh no!" Pixel thought. "What do I do? What do I do?!"  Pixel didn't want to go back, but she didn't want to have to talk to any other tribute. That might cause her to create a friendship with them and then how is she supposed to survive? Of course,Pixel knew she couldn't win. She and Dell weren't leaving the other behind. But,she wanted to last as long as possible, and she didn't want to feel bad for surviving by any means. Almost any means. Pixel refused to out right kill any one. She would out-smart them, but not murder them. Pixel started backing up. Her foot banged against the door, though. It was pretty loud too. The boy turned around. There was enough moon light for them to see each other. The boy smiled gently.
"You can come over,if you want," he said. Pixel stood by the door for a moment, trying to make her foot feel better. "Don't worry,I won't bite," the boy added.
"I'm not worried about you biting," Pixel thought. Yet, she went over anyways. She leaned against the railing and looks down into the streets. It was so noisy. Not quiet loud enough for Pixel to hear words, but loud enough for her to hear the racket. "They're pretty loud," the boy said. Pixel chuckled.
"Yeah," she said softly. She glanced over at the boy. His face was pink. "What did I do?" Pixel asked, concerned.
"Y..your voice is b... beautiful.." he stuttered. Pixel blushed.
   "I..I.." she said.
"I..I'm sorry," the boy apologized. "I just, kinda speak my mind," he said. "I.. I'm Atom,by the way. Atom Bomb,District thirteen,". Pixel smiled,a bit more at ease.
"Fitting," she said. Atom laughed. "I'm Pixel,Pixel Firefly. I'm from District three,". Atom smiled.
"Tech District, fitting," he said. The two chuckled. "But,what about the hair?" he asked. Pixel looked at her hair. It was still slightly lit.
"Oh!" she exclaimed. "Off!" she said. Her hair automatically extinguished. Atom gawked at Pixel. "Chemical accident," Pixel mumbled, her face redder than her hair. Atom chuckled.
"It's okay," he said. He reached up and pulled off his black beanie that he was wearing. Up under the hat was Atom's leaf-green hair. And it glowed.
   "Woah," Pixel mumbled.
"Yeah," Atom said. "Nuclear waste," he said. Pixel smiled, then yawned. Atom did the same.
"I should probably get back to bed," Pixel said.
   "Me too," Atom said.
"Nice meeting you," Pixel said as she headed toward the door.
"You too," he said, still by the rail. As Pixel was shutting the door behind her,she heard Atom whistle. It was a simple, eight whistle tune. The only difference between the notes was that the fourth note went up and the eight went down. Pixel smiled as she whistle the tune back, then shut the door and headed back to her room to finally get some more rest.
Pixel woke up to knocking on the door.
"It's a big day today!" Bellina's preppy, much to happy for so early in the morning, voice came through the door.
"Five more minutes," Pixel muttered, burying her head in the pillow. Dell laughed.
"You're lit," he said. Pixel looked at him with one eye. The wall in between had been moved back. Dell was laying on his back,a smile spread across his face.
   "Lit?" Pixel asked grumpily.
"Yeah,Pix," Dell said, turning his head toward Pixel. "Your hair,". Pixel looked at a tip of her hair that had fallen over her shoulder. It was slightly burning, like a fire that wasn't put completely out.
"Oh! Mother of Christ!" Pixel shouted. "Off! Off!!"  Dell burst out laughing. He laughed so hard he tumbled off his bed,and was still laughing after that. "Shove off!" Pixel yelled at Dell.
"Geez! Geez! I'll stop, okay?" he said.
"Good," Pixel said, hopping out of bed. She was fully awake now! Pixel looked at the closet on her side. It had several sections. Pixel typed in a couple pieces of clothing that she wanted. The closet doors shut as it went off around the Capitol to find what she wanted.
"So...what'd you dream about?" Dell asked, doing the same on his side of the room. Pixel's hair sparked. Dell laughed. Dell knew that if Pixel had an emotional dream her hair would light up. It did the same thing with his wings.
"It was...nothing," Pixel said after some hesitation.
"Nothing?" Dell asked. "Sure," he said. Pixel heard a slight noise. She turned around and saw Dell drawing the curtain. At that moment,Pixel's closet dinged. She opened the doors. Inside were a pair of caprice blue jeans and a turquoise and pale red plaid shirt. Pixel quickly slipped into the clothes and threw her boots on afterwards. "Done?" Dell asked.
"Yeah," Pixel responded. Dell pulled the curtain back and walked over to Pixel.
   "So..." Dell said.
"I'll tell you what I dreamt about if you tell me why you walked in last night with a bright red face," Pixel said, leaning against the closet. Dell's face reddened and his wings sparked.
"I...met a fellow tribute.." he said.
"And..?" Pixel asked.
"Things happened..." Dell said with a slightly embarrassed shrug. Pixel rolled her eyes.
"Okay, whatever," she said. "I met a kid last night too. His name was Atom Bomb, District thirteen,".
"Fitting name," Dell said.
"I know, now don't cut me off," Pixel continued. "He said that my voice sounded amazing, and we just kinda talked. Then I headed back to the room,".
"You left something out," Dell said as though he were a protective older brother, even though he pretty much was.
"It was just a tune," Pixel said, pushing past Dell to the double doors. "Now come on, we won't to get some food before Bellina has us doing who knows what to prepare for the interview tonight,". The two headed out of the room and down the hall. The sat down and quickly dug into the food set before them.
"So," Bellina said. Pixel still had no idea how she was so hyper in the morning. "Rilanna and I will be coaching you today. I will be teaching you how to be proper and she will be teaching you, well,". Bellina looked at Rilanna. "What will you be doing?" she asked.
"I'll be telling you how to act. If you'll be acting funny, cute,or whatever. I'm going to make you likable," Rilanna said.
"So,before we start today, we need to know if you'd rather be coached together or.."
"Together," the two chorused, cutting Bellina off.
"Well then,it's settled. You'll be coached together. I'll take you two first. So hurry up and eat!" Bellina said cheerfully. She then rushed off, probably to pro are something for Dell and Pixel. They hurriedly ate and then met Bellina in their room. Bellina had the curtain pulled. She made Dell go to his side and get dressed while she helped Pixel into her outfit. It was one of Bellina's dresses. It was floor length and a strange shade of purple. Pixel was also put in what must have been at least five inch heels. Bellina had both Pixel and Dell working for four hours straight. It was surprisingly hard work. Pixel and Dell were happy to put the Capitol clothes back on. They then went and met Rilanna in a room, much like the one that Dell and Poxel had talked to their stylists in. Pixel and Dell say side by side while Rilanna studied them from the other side.
"What are you doing?" Dell finally asked.
"Trying to figure out which angel to use for you, either of you," she responded.
"So what's the obvious approach?" Pixel asked, leaning on Dell's shoulder.
"Lovers," Rilanna said.
"Ew!" the two shouted together.
"You act like it," Rilanna said with a shrug.
"We act like we love each other because we do,but not romantically," Dell explained.
"Yeah,me and Dell have been like brother and sister since...well,forever really," Pixel added. Rilanna considered this.
"Okay then,we'll go with that,". Rilanna then proceeded to ask the two questions and, according to her, they answered perfectly. "You two can go now," Rilanna said after fifty or so questions. The two nodded and headed out to meet their stylists. They hugged before they parted to their stylists.
"See ya soon," Dell whispered.
"Course ya will," Pixel whispered back. They then parted and went into the rooms they first were in for the re-makeing. This time, there wasn't a prep team with extravagant hair that greeted her. It was just Yinko. Pixel cocked her head in confusion.
"I'll be doing you're hair and makeup tonight," Yonko explained. Pixel nodded. Yinko led Pixel over and put her in her dress. It was a floor length gown with a small slit starting at her knee and going down to the bottom of the dress. It was covered in sequences. It had a short layer of green lining at the bottom. The rest was a gorgeous bronze. Yinko handed Pixel a pair of turquoise wedges. They were barley an inch high, which made Pixel more comfortable. Yinko made Pixel's makeup look as though she glowed. "Beautiful," Yinko said. Pixel smiled.
"I have one more touch to add,if you don't mind," Pixel said. Yinko nodded her approval. "Little light," Pixel whispered. Her hair lit up at the tips. Yinko gazed in awe at Pixel's hair. "If I get to excited,it'll light up even more," Pixel added.
"That's perfect!" Yinko said. Yinko then led Pixel to were the interview was held. Dell walked up behind her after a while.
"Thank goodness you're here!" Pixel said, hugging Dell. Pixel could see several people staring at Dell and her from behind them. "We're drawing attention," she said.
"Wonder if it's the flames or the hug?" Dell said playfully. Before the two new it,they were going onto the stage. The anthem played and they sat in chairs. Hinlkal Rikman, the interviewer, got plenty of cheers as he came onto the stage. Pixel didn't pay much attention to the District one tributes.
"Karambit Hunter," Hinlkal said. The girl from District two stepped up. Pixel didn't catch much of anything from her. She was good with a bow.
"We'll wait and see what score you get," Pixel thought.
"Silver Wilson!" Hinlkal called. Silver? That's a girl's name! The girl by Pixel stood up and walked to the front of the stage. She had bleach blonde hair and wore several silver bracelets. "So, Silver, tell us. What can you do best?" Hinlkal asked.
"Give me a silver weapon,I can use it!" Silver said proudly.
"Interesting. Guess that comes with the name, huh?" Hinlkal said. The live audience laughed.
"Yup!" Silver said with a laugh.
"How about we go back to the reaping," Hinlkal said. "This was a first, where a girl volunteered for a boy. That boy,was he your brother?" Silver gulped.
"Yeah,he's my little brother. He's only twelve. His name is Remmi. He's my everything," Silver said.
"And did he visit you?" Silver nodded.
"He told me that I had to come home for him," she said.
"And what did you tell him?" Hinlkal asked. Silver's voice seemed to drop.
"I promised him that I would," she said.
"I'm sure you did," Hinlkal said. "Now,we're almost out of time. Any finale words, Silver?"
"Yeah, thank you District three for that hunk of a boy!" Silver said. The buzzer rung signaling Silver was out of time.
"Well we'll leave at that! Best of luck to you,Silver Wilson, tribute of District two!" There was a loud cheer from the crowd as Silver sat back down. Pixel didn't even care about the fact that Silver's volunteering made it a hard follow up.
"She likes Dell!" was all that Pixel was worried about.
"Pixel Firefly!" Hinlkal was calling. Pixel stood up uneasily. Dell squeezed her hand three times. Then he had let go.
"I love you,".
"I love you more," Pixel thought.
"So,Pixel, that was quiet an interact you made," Hinlkal said. "I especially loved that hand holding with you and your fellow tribute. What exactly was that?" Pixel gulped.
"Just breathe!" Pixel could practically hear Dell saying. Pixel exhaled slowly.
"Well," Pixel said. "Me and Dell have been close ever since we were young," she explained. Hinlkal nodded.
"And how about that outfit?" he asked. "What was it like wearing flames, chemical ones at that?"
"It was thrilling!" Pixel responded almost immediately. "In fact," she said,a sly smile slipping into her face. "I'm wearing them tonight,". The crowd gasped. "Would oh like to see them?" The crowd's cheer was nearly deafening.
"Wait," Hinlkal said.
"Don't worry, they're perfectly safe," Pixel said.
"Well, what do you think? Should she show us?" he asked the crowd. The crowd roared. "I think that's a yes!" Pixel took a step forward, spread out her arms, and twirled. Pixel was engulfed in the flames. A smile spread onto her face. She felt her hair start glowing. Pixel kept spinning. Before long the crowd weren't just cheering, several were gasping. Pixel finally came to a stop. She wasn't even dizzy in the slightest. "Don't stop!" Hinlkal said.
"I don't want to run out of time, though!" Pixel said happily.
"That was quiet spectacular," Hinlkal said. "What was that with your hair?"
"Oh that's?" Pixel asked as though it was nothing. "Me and Dell had a chemical accident when we were young. Now my hair looks like this and lights up sometimes and he had wings that do the same,".
"Wow!" Hinlkal said. "One more question before we run out of time. You and Dell seem close. Are you two a couple?"
Pixel was about to respond with "goodness no!",but the buzzer rang. Hinlkal sighed as though disappointed.
"Guess we can't know," he said. "Best of luck to you, Pixel Firefly, tribute of District three!" Pixel went back to her chair and sat. Dell smiled at her encouragingly and gave a thumbs up. "Dell Comp!" Hinlkal called. Dell stood up and walked over to Hinlkal. They talked about the accident, how he got his wings. Hinlkal eventually asked if Dell liked anyone.
"Not officially," Dell replied. "I mean,I barely even know her,we just met. And besides,it wouldn't even work out,".
"And why not?" Hinlkal asked, seemingly concerned.
"Cause she's a tribute," Dell said.
"What?!" Pixel thought. "Who in the world would Dell like?" she thought frantically. "I'll have to ask after this!" The buzzer cut off Pixel's thought.
"Well, best of luck to you, Dell Comp, tribute of District three!" Pixel payed hardly any attention to the rest of the tributes. The boy from four was a wiz at hunting and could build pretty much anything. The girl from eight was good at sewing and could easily use a spear. The boy from eight was good with a throwing mace. The boy from thirteen was good with bombs. Boy from thirteen. "So,Atom,do you have any special girl?" Hinlkal was asking.
"Atom!!" Pixel screamed in her mind.
"Well, there is a girl I met recently," Atom said. "Her voice is so soft and her beauty radiates like, well, radiation!"
"And what is this girl's name?" Hinlkal asked.
"Her name is Pixel," Atom whispered. The buzzer rung.
"Well that's pretty bad luck. Best of luck to you, Atom Bomb, tribute of District thirteen!" Pixel felt her face get hot and her hair light up. The tributes stood up for the anthem. Pixel could clearly see her,Dell, Atom, and the other tributes on the screen. So much tragic love that couldn't be helped. It was pathetic. But, then again,Pixel held love to. But she didn't need to worry about it. The tributes exited the stage. Once out of the cameras view,Pixel bolted to an elevator. She frantically got in and zoomed to her floor. She ran straight into her room and threw herself on the bed.
"Pix?" Dell asked from the door. "You okay?" Pixel's hair responded for her. It was full blaze. "It's Silver," Dell said after some silence. Pixel sat up and looked at Dell.
"What?" she asked.
"Silver,I think I like Silver," he repeated. Pixel smiled slightly.
"That makes me a tad more at ease," she said. "I...I don't know if I like Atom or not," Pixel admitted. "He's nice and cute, but if I like him it just makes things worse!" Dell walked over and sat by Pixel. Pixel laid her head on Dell's shoulder. His wings were blazing too.
"It's okay,Pix," he said. "I'm here, right here,". Pixel buried her face into Dell's chest. She fell asleep crying.
Dell dressed Pixel in what she wore to bed the night before. He didn't really care about seeing her undressed. It didn't bother him one bit. He tucked Pixel into bed.
"Don't worry,Pix," he whispered. "I'm not gonna leave ya,".
