"Silver! He's over here!" Pixel yelled. Silver was by here in a split second. She gasped at the sight of Dell and rushed over to him. Dell was trapped in a suspended rope cage. Silver quickly cut him down, catching as he fell out of the trap. He seemed dehydrated and simply out of it.
"S-Silver?" he asked.
"I'm here," she said softly. She carefully untangled the ropes from his wings and helped him stand.
"What's that?" Pixel asked, concern laced in her voice. There was a gigantic gash across his side. Dell quickly covered it with his hands, which were caked in dried blood.
"Pix, I didn't see you there. It's good to see you again after all of that," Dell said weakly, attempting and failing to cover the gash.
"What happened?" Pixel asked before Silver could verbalize the thought.
"It's nothing," Dell said a little too quickly
"Nothing?" Pixel asked sarcastically.
"Oh no. Here she goes," Dell said.
"What do you...". But before Silver could finish Pixel let it loose.
"That is a knife cut, most likely a bronze, rather small, possibly pocket knife," she said as she examined the wound. "But it was quite obviously inflicted by someone else. Now Dell, do me the honor and tell me who. Who in the world hurt you? Who dared to lay a hand on you? Who touched my big brother?!" Pixel said, her voice escalating to a yell. Dell instinctively shushed her.
"Wait, did you say brother?" Silver asked.
"Obviously. There's no way I'd see him any other way," Pixel said as though it was plain to see.
"Oh," Silver said quietly.
Suddenly, a dark skinned girl appeared out from the forest. She had long, dark brown hair that was back in a tight braid and her grey eyes showed pure hatred and a lust to kill. Pixel quickly scanned her and then her expression changed from sudden surprise to pure rage. She had the knife that cut Dell. It still had blood on it, too. She hadn't even bothered to clean it! Pixel was filled with anger. She had attempted to kill Dell! Pixel, in a outburst of rage, rushed at the girl. Pixel pulled out a dagger from her belt and charged at the tribute. Before the other could react, Pixel had driven her dagger through the tribute's chest, right at her heart's placement. Pixel pulled out the dagger and back away. The tribute held a hand over the wound for a few seconds, then collapsed to the ground. Pixel, Silver, and Dell waited in silence for a moment.
A canon sounded.
Realization hit Pixel at that moment. She dropped the dagger and her hands flew to her face. She had just killed someone. Her very first kill.
Silver looked at the tribute for a solid minute. Then she walked over to the limp body and, with her silver dagger, cut the girl's head clean off.
"How dare she try to touch Dell," she muttered. "That's for doing all that sh*t to him,".
The three then headed back to the camp, tired and slightly covered in blood.
"Sooo, that just happened," Pixel said as they walked at a slow pace back to the cornucopia.
"Apparently so," Dell said weakly. They walked on in silence for a while. Eventually, Dell had to use his wings to support himself.
"I just decapitated a person," Silver said suddenly, breaking the awkward silence.
"No sh*it, really?" Dell said sarcastically.
"Ha, ha, ha," Silver said in a monotone voice. This, of course, caused the three to chuckle.
Soon they entered the clearing and then walked over to the corn. Atom was the only one sitting there.
"We're back!" Silver yelled, causing Atom to jump slightly.
"And we found Dell," Pixel added.
"Nice," Atom said as he finished sharpening a stick with his pocket knife. "I found a battle axe in the woods as long as two tributes,". Pixel caught her breath for a moment, nearly choking., "Don't worry," he said. "I killed them. Now there's only one tribute other than us," he said nonchalantly.
"And, did you do it quickly?" Pixel asked, not wanting to imagine a gruesome seen for the twins she had helped.
"Well, there was a girl and a boy. The girl seemed more of a threat so I eliminated her first. She ran up to me, I disarmed her, and then head-butted the living crap out of her. Then snapped her neck for good measure. The boy seemed absolutely miserable, so i just snapped his neck. He looked pretty sick anyway. And that's how I killed the two tributes," he said.
Pixel buried her face in her hands, beginning to cry.
"What?" Atom asked, completely oblivious. "Was it something I said? They were just two tributes we needed to get out of the way,".
The words echoed in Pixel's head.
They were just two tributes we needed to get out of the way....out of the way....out of the way!
Pixel snapped.
"Out of the way? Out of the way you say. I helped those two. The boy was sick and I got medicine for them, and you go....you go and murder him! I HELPED THEM AND THEN YOU KILL THEM WITHOUT A SECOND THOUGHT!" Pixel yelled. "I....I can't even look at you," she said. With that, Pixel stormed out of the cornucopia, tears running down her cheeks uncontrollably. She walked to the nearest tree and quickly scaled it, easily making it forty to fifty feet in the air. In that moment, she didn't care if she fell.
After several minutes, Silver came out and climbed up to Pixel.
"That was really dramatic back there," she said. Pixel sighed.
"I know, it's just....". But Silver cut her off.
"What if they had attacked Atom," she said.
"Well maybe she was protecting her brother...." Pixel began again.
"No! Just stop that. You're defending them. They could have come and attacked us once the boy was healed. This game is about surviving, not making friends. Atom did what he had to do to survive,". Silver paused for a moment to let her words sink in. "And besides, it could have been worse," she added. PIxel sighed, knowing she was right. It could have been worse. One of the other tributes could have gotten them and killed them in a bloody battle.
Pixel shook the thought out of her head. She didn't want to think about it.
"You're right," she finally said.
"I know. Now come on, it's getting late and we need to eat,". Pixel nodded in agreement and together the two made their way down the tree and back to the corn. Even after the talk, though, Pixel still wasn't ready to forgive Atom.
"Maybe soon," she thought. "Maybe,".
