"Are you ready to explain yet?" Erica asked, sounding exasperated after a while.
It took a long time for me to think of a response. I couldn't tell her about the plan or about what could've happened in the courtyard. So what could I tell her?
"Erica, with what you've told me about him, do you honestly think that I'd still go after him?" I told her.
She rolled her eyes. "No, but I am beginning to question whether you're mentally retarded enough to consider it. Why were you with him?"
"Aeron and I don't have anything going on, it's just... friendship," I said.
"You still had to go and ditch me for him," she retorted.
"Look, Erica, I'm sorry but I don't know if I'll be able to change anything," I said, avoiding her gaze.
This time, she looked hurt. "So that's it? You're just sorry?"
"I really am," I said intently.
"Why, Maddison? Tell me what's going on. If it's just friendship then why can't you do anything?" she demanded.

I couldn't let her know anything. As much as it hurt me to hide this from her, I couldn't risk letting her know.
"I can't tell you," I said, my voice small and helpless.
I could finally meet her eyes, that were filled with tears.
"All right, I see how it is."
The pain in Erica's voice mingled painfully with her anger. Her azure eyes no longer recognised me. And she stormed out of the dorm.

My body began to tremble, the tears surfacing in my eyes. The only true friend I could've had, and I lost her. Erica didn't feel as temporary as all the others did. She was loyal enough to last much longer. I fell to the floor and curled up into a ball. A sob escaped me and I pressed my face between my knees. I was so sorry...

"Maddison, come on. Are you all right?" Aeron's voice.
I sat up straight to look at him. "I thought you'd be in the courtyard."
He wiped my tears from my pale cheeks. "I figured I'd have to come get you. What happened?"
"Erica -I lost her." I sobbed.
"What do you mean?" he asked gently.
"She wanted to know what we've been doing and I couldn't tell her. She thinks I'm throwing myself at you," I said, hysterical.
He smirked. "Well, I wouldn't mind..."
I shoved him. "Now is not the time for that! The point is, she thinks I've broken her trust and she's more likely to get worse because of that."
"You're right, but we still can't tell her. All we can do now is go through with our plans -and fast. Erica will understand once all of this is over and we've found our angel," Aeron said, his tone grave.
"Right." I sighed, wiping away at my overflowing eyes.
Aeron cradled me in his strong, warm arms until my breathing reverted to normal. He kissed my forehead -something I would let him do just this once- and led me out of the dorm, where we were about to set off to find the angel.
