The only thing I could think to do was laugh hysterically. I received very puzzled looks from both Aeron and Grace, who looked as though they'd been told the world was going to end the next day. Doctor Griffin appeared as neutral as he had when he first walked through the door.
"You can't be serious," I said, an incredulous smile still stretching my facial features.
"Do you need proof?" Doctor Griffin asked.
Aeron answered for me, "I suppose so."
My so-called grandfather sauntered up to his desk and withdrew a folder from the bottom drawer. He thrust it into my hands with a bemused look on his worn face. I took the liberty of taking a seat on the hospital bed and opening to the first page that presented itself. There stood all Doctor Griffin's personal details. His first name was Bruno. Near the bottom of the page, the names of his closest relatives were scrawled in bold, block letters.
QUIN ZEPH
LUZIEL ZEPH
MADDISON DEVONNE ZEPH
My heart leapt and then dropped when I read those last three names. It was true. Doctor Griffin -Bruno Griffin- was my grandfather. I felt my face go slack as all the blood in my veins ran cold.Grace spoke hastily. "What does it say?"
"My parents' names," I swallowed, "and mine are all written in his list of relatives."
"Indeed." Bruno acknowledged. "I take it you don't recognize their first names?"
I shook my head. "I forgot them."
"What are their names?" Aeron asked gently, his blue eyes dark with concern.
"Quin and Luziel," I uttered.
Grace gasped. "Luziel."
"I see Miss Lance knows an angel name when she hears one." Bruno mused. "Quin, my daughter, married Luziel when she was quite young."
"Are you trying to tell me that my father's an angel?" I said, my throat as dry as desert air.
"Yes, Maddison, that's exactly what I'm trying to tell you," Bruno responded. "But maybe it's not wise to begin telling the tale from there.""Start from the beginning, then. Maddison has a lot to remember," Aeron put in, surprisingly calm.
"Hold on. Are you sure you're okay, Maddison? With all this new information, I mean," Grace asked, noticing how much I was shaking.
My emotions felt strong enough to trigger a seizure. As much as I knew my heart could hardly take any more blows, I had to push forward. Nothing made sense so far and if it didn't soon, I wouldn't be able to get anything close to a good night's sleep until then."Grandpa," I forced myself to say, "tell me everything."
Bruno smiled at the first mention of the name I'd been meant to use since the moment we met.
"I think we should all have a seat. We could be here a while," he suggested and pulled a leather chair out from under his desk.
Aeron and Grace sat on either side of me on the hospital bed. Bruno readied himself to begin telling the story. I steeled myself for what was to come.My past was about to resurface once and for all.
