17 Suspects

Questions were floating about my head, unanswered. All I could do was make assumptions. Right now, the only logical explanation for this was that the council suspected that any one of the Renewal candidates could be the angel. Of course. What better position could you be in if you were on a secret mission in the Above? The angel could have much better access to the council headquarters. They'd already confirmed that four of us were normal. But Grace clearly hadn't been proven to be normal just yet. While I didn't think the angel could be Grace, I knew I might have to ask Aeron to investigate her and show her the book. It was the only way we could be sure.

Realising that I'd been thinking too long, I folded up our files and put them in my pocket with the schedule. If the guards happened to notice, they would assume they'd gone missing when the papers had fallen. At least that's what I hoped. I hastily added the photos to the pile of papers and placed the torch back on the table. I listened with my ear against the door for any sounds outside. There was silence so I opened the door and emerged. It took a minute or two for my eyes to adjust to the darkness but I could make out the ominous, broken down tool shed from across the lawn.

Once I'd looked from left to right as though I were about to cross the road back on Earth, I began to sprint along the shadows of the great headquarters. I stopped metres away from the tool shed when I noticed that Stadler was standing guard outside the door. I sighed inwardly and tried to think of a plan. Stadler was a scrawny young man with a nasty overbite and a crooked nose. And I could smell the alcohol on his breath for miles. He'd been drinking, which I figured would give me some kind of advantage.
