"What is someone like you doing in the Above, Luziel?" Quin asked, unsuspecting as every other citizen of the Above always had been.
They were now lying side by side on Quin's bed, where glimmering rays of moonlight leaked in through the window. Luziel didn't bother hiding the gold in his eyes now. He actually found it liberating.
"My Creator has been sending angels to the Above for centuries. His way of watching over you, I guess. He thought we'd be accepted among you," Luziel explained, his tone growing a little bit dark toward the end.
Quin sat up, her brow furrowed. "You're making it sound like you aren't.""Why do you think I'm hiding?" Luziel chuckled hysterically. "Your people are capturing us, hunting us, and using us as slaves."
"But that's-" Quin couldn't even find the right words.
Angels were meant to be these incredible, superior beings. But it was clear now that these superior beings were just as capable of being vulnerable, just as capable of falling in love.
"What are they doing to you?" Quin asked.
"We're either used as common domestic slaves or we're storm makers for whatever a storm could do to benefit your people. Sometimes our blood is drained and used in your elixirs. Our wings get their feathers plucked out at an alarming rate so the fibers can be used in construction and crafts. We're basically tortured. The list goes on." Luziel mentioned this with a monotone voice.
"Why hasn't He done anything?" Quin demanded.
"He doesn't know," he replied simply. "It seems the council has found a way to keep it from him."
"The council." She contemplated. "They glorify you."
He nodded. "Indeed. They have to keep up appearances."
Quin clenched her fists so furiously that all her knuckles clicked. It was a terrible injustice, a cruel reality. And it had to be stopped. Luziel sat up, eased Quin's fists and kissed her white knuckles. "Quin, there's nothing to be done. I can't leave the Above without permission from the Creator and I can't send him any messages because I'm not a messenger. And you can imagine what the council's done to all of them."
"Then what are you?" Quin whispered.
"A guardian." Luziel couldn't help but smile at Quin as he said this.
"My guardian?" she enquired.
"It seems that way, doesn't it?" he said, shrugging one shoulder. Then, Quin rose from the bed, beginning to pace around the room. A plan was forming in her head; Luziel could tell. He felt unease manifest itself inside him.
"So, you've managed to hide from the council?" she blurted.
"Yes, I'm one of few," he answered.
She stopped pacing so that she stood rigidly in front of him. "You have something the rest of the Angels don't, Luziel. Liberty. What can you do with that?"
"Save myself, Quin, and wait until He calls me back to Heaven," he said as if it were the most obvious option.
"You're a coward," Quin snapped.
If there was one thing Luziel knew, it was that Quin was a fighter. Though his ego was pitifully wounded, he knew she was right; his plan was cowardly. Besides, how long had he already been waiting?
"What do you suggest I do?" he asked calmly.
"Unite with your brothers and sisters, Luziel," Quin said fervently. "Find those who have also managed to escape and go against your oppressors. There may even be more than a few out there. You could build an army. You have more than just liberty, you have power."
Quin knew the angels had weaknesses but they had enough power to rise above those who exploited them. Luziel had to realize this and act.
"Who knew I could be this blind?" Luziel said admiringly. "You're right. But how am I going to do this on my own?"
Quin chuckled. "I figured you'd be the one advising me."
"Open-mindedness is rare even among celestial folk," he said. "Also, I like to think that we'll advise each other."She smiled before saying, "Is there any way for you to contact another angel?"
"As a matter of fact, there is. Angels who've been captured have been using this one method for centuries. You simply create a different coloured star over the place you'd like to meet or over an area that should be avoided," Luziel explained with a new-found enthusiasm.
"How do you know which is which?" Quin asked.
"It's the difference in colour. Blue is for a meeting place and red is for dangerous areas," he replied.
She raised her eyebrows. "No one's ever noticed this? Not even the council?"
He shook his head. "Not even the council. Angels try to get to the meeting points as quickly as possible in order to dispose of the blue stars. The red stars dissipate on their own after a certain period of time."
"You need to take action as soon as you can," Quin said firmly.
"But the free angels will probably think it's a slave communication signal gone AWOL," he countered.
"You'll have to create a new signal then. Make this star gold. That'll make them curious enough to come check things out at least." She nodded, satisfied with her plan.Luziel drew his knees up to his chest vulnerably and ran his fingers through his bleach blonde hair. He knew this could really work. This attempt would be the first at a revolt and his people had ample power to go through with it. But his people had lived in fear and some had died because of this cruel council. How many of them would still be ready and willing to fight? He then felt Quin's hands come to rest on his shoulders and he looked up at her beautiful face. Love decorated her expression and, beneath that, hope, determination and belief.
"I know the odds are all stacked against you. But if your people are ever going to get through this, what they need is a leader who's confident in his cause," Quin said devoutly.
He bowed his head and she met his gesture by pressing her forehead to his.
"Fight, Luziel. And if you can't right now, then when will you?"^^^
Over the next few months, Luziel went out every night and sent a golden star into the sky, hoping to spark a passing angel's curiosity. Quin was with him every step of the way. The plan was not effective immediately but after the first two months of trying, the first angel finally appeared. His name was Haniel. He was the first of many. By the end of that month, they'd gathered a group of ten angels. They were growing. Quin's plan was becoming more and more promising with each new angel that joined their little rebellion. Luziel was filled with a new hope that they could truly end angelic slavery.
Quin and Luziel finally got married six months after they formed the rebellion. They had never been happier. Luziel finally felt useful to his people and, like Quin told him, he'd become confident in his cause. He was grateful to Quin for all she'd done and for all the happiness she brought to his life. Quin was simply joyful in being by her husband's side and supporting him in all the ups and downs of their wondrous new life. It was a long time before the couple decided to have their first child. Four years to be precise. Her name was Maddison. She looked so much like her father with that blonde hair of hers, but that effervescent smile could only be her mother's. An angel's genes never allowed for half-breeds. This baby girl was an angel. Born with her very own set of majestic angel wings.
