Chapter 1- Rice Krispe Squares Are The Best Invention Ever

Her name is Ella. And Ella is brave.

...

The morning buzz from her alarm clock made Ella jump out of bed and run down the stairs to prepare breakfast for her parents- no, guardians. They don't deserve the title parents, Ella believes.

Her guardians found Ella sitting on there porch step just after she was born. Normally her guardians wouldn't mind giving her away. But the word got out that they get an adorable child. Giving Ella up would embarrass them too much. So her guardians make Ella work her pigtails off.

She's suffered sevens years of living with those monsters of guardians. Seven years of constant yelling. Seven years of pain.

One day, Ella thought, I'm going to leave here. I'm going to go somewhere pretty. Somewhere where the sunshines and no one can find me.

The idea of running away came to Ella's young mind many times. She's failed to do so though. It was Ella's goal to finish her magic school so she can become a proper witch.

That's right. Ella is a witch in training. Not a very good one, but still one.

Ella quickly tied a dirty apron to her tiny waist and began to cook breakfast for her guardians. Her breakfast comes when they leave for work. She scrambled around the kitchen grabbing ingredients placing them on the counter before her.

As the eggs sizzled in the large pan on the stove she poured two cups of hot coffee just as her so called mother walked into the room.

Ella's opinion if Miranda Snizer contains many rude words. She hates Miranda's messy blonde hair that's always up in a bun. She hates the big wart on her ugly nose. And she really hates her squeaky voice. "Ugh! The coffee is terrible!"

Ella did argue. She already knew from experience what would happen. "Sorry! I'll make a new pot!" Ella stuttered.

"Ah! Never mind. I'll be late for work again because of you!" Miranda spat. Just then the other demon of the house walked in. His name is Fredrick. Fredrick reeks of beer and cigaret smoke. He is also a warlock.

Fredrick plucked up the second cup of coffee then spat it out. "Gah! Can't you ever make a decent cup of coffee!" After that followed a slap of the head for Ella.

"I'm sorry!" Ella whimpered. Fredrick grumbled as Ella placed the plates of eggs and toast in front of them. The rest of the morning was quiet. Her guardians finished breakfast without any rude comments or punishments.

As they left for work Ella cleaned up the kitchen and poured herself some cereal. After that she quickly threw on a grey dress that had many patches covering it. Ella sat down on the ground and slid her small feet into a pair of brown hiking boots. That's all her guardians gave her to wear for shoes. She liked them though. Ella has had them ever since she was four. Sure they were big on her, but she grew into them.

Ella stood up and quickly braided her black hair into two pigtails then straighten her round glasses over her big green eyes. Her face is covered in cuts, bruises, bandages and a whole lot of freckles.

Quickly Ella grabbed her patched up witches hat and her back pack then ran downstairs and out the back door.

She doesn't own a broom yet since she's so young. Ella kinda wished she had one though. It would make getting to school a lot faster. Instead she cuts through a small graveyard behind her house.

Everyone at her school makes fun if Ella for going thought the graveyard. Just one of the many things they tease her about. Her classmates say its creepy in the graveyard and that a ghost might steal her soul or a zombie eat her brains. She ignored them though. The graveyard didn't scare Ella. She actually found it rather peaceful. Anywhere where her guardians or classmates weren't she enjoyed.

Ella whirled past the small field of headstones when a loud snap startled her. She spun around to see nothing there. A moment of hesitation passed before Ella continued to run frantically to school.

School. Ella hates everything but learning. She loves learning about magic. She hates the students. A normal day of school went by. Someone calls her four eyes then knocks her books out of her hands. Then at lunch someone spills there fold on her ragged dress and laughs. Finishing up a group of kid surround her then tease her for being the youngest amongst them. Ella has gotten used to it though. It happens every day.

Things started to stir up on her way home. Ella wasn't in a hurry since her guardians get home late. This was her time to relax with a calm walk. Well, so she thought.

The fall leaves twirled above Ella's head as she walked along the pathway through the graveyard. Everything was so peaceful until a loud snap caused Ella to jump. It was just like that morning. Ella paused and looked around to see nothing once again. She shrugged it off and continued to walk when a much louder snap got her worried. Ella looked behind her to see no one, but when she face forward she saw what was making the noise.

Ella gave a shrieked and fell down as three, no, four zombies emerged from behind a tree. They had to be eternal zombies if they were alive without a witches chant or a the Halloween moon. Ether way Ella was freaked out.

The zombies gave Ella a weird look as if they weren't sure on why she was screaming. Just as the first zombie took a step towards her she screamed loudly and chucked the first thing in her dress pocket. The world greatest invention, a Rice Krispe treat.

The first zombie ignored the fact it hit his face and still gave Ella a weird look. One of the shorter zombies peered our from behind the first zombie then picked up the treat. Curious, he took a bite of the treat with the wrapper still on.

At first, Ella was confused since zombies usually crave brains, then she went back to screaming.

The short zombie smiled and showed his zombie friends his new discovery. They all began to feed on the Rice Krispe square. Ella just watch as they finished up. As soon as the zombies realized the treat was gone they turned back to Ella hoping for more.

Before any of them could even give a moan, voices in the distance caused them to shuffle away.

Three of Ella bullies walked over spotting her in the ground covered in sweat. "Did Ella find a mirror and look in it" the first girl snickered. Ella was tuned out from the taunts. All she could think of was what just happened.

...

That night Ella sat in bed thinking about the four zombies she encountered that day. Why did they not hurt her me? Why did they eat the treat? And why am I even alive? Ella was buzzing with questions. Then an idea struck. It would involve a scientific chart and a whole lot of Rice Krispe treats.
