"Girl when I'm with you I loose track of time. When I'm without you you're stuck on my mind. " ~Nathan Sykes, Over and Over Again

She sat by the sea. Watching the waves hug the shore and feeling the cool water on her feet. She always loved coming out here. The view of the never-ending, clear, blue sea never got old. It helped calm her but also brought some unwanted thoughts.

He watched her from afar. He was raised by the sea just as she was but he was more fascinated by her than the water. She never spoke, he never saw her with friends or family, but yet she always seemed content by this body of water. When he first saw her he genuinely thought she was a mermaid. His mother used to show him a child's story about one and by the description, they looked the same. Only the girls hair shown red when the light hit its soft waves and her eyes were a dark vibrant blue that reminded him of the sea during a storm. She was his definition of beauty. Once he turned 14 he finally got the courage to go meet her. She just sat there peacefully and let the boy sit besides her.

He noticed her presence was very welcoming but cautious and he admired her for that. Ever since that day he would come to the beach when ever he could and sit beside her. They never talked or did anything for that matter. They would only nod at each other for acknowledgement and wave for their goodbyes. He assumed she couldn't speak at all, maybe an avox but he quickly opted that out. Why would an Avox be here, in district four? He never asked her about it and kept to himself as he continuously kept her company. After awhile, she started to trust him and would lay her head on his shoulder or on his lap as they sat under the shade of some trees. Of course he didn't protest. He felt their connection growing stronger everyday and he didn't even know her name yet. One day his soon to be mentor, Mags, saw what he had been doing, she told him,

"I'm proud of you boy.You are very brave for doing this. She is a very lonely and confused girl ever since she won her games last year. Poor girl; doesn't even know how to speak English." Of course that confused the boy even more. Everyone spoke English. He didn't even know there were other languages! But if anything this made him even more determined to know her. Sadly he never sought out his goal.

If only he could've gotten to know her more before he was taken a few months after he turned 14. Once he was entered into this game of genocide, he then figured out who this 'little mermaid' was. Her name is Kailani Lapis. It was very, very rare to see a person who didn't know fluent English. She just knew some key words and phrases. They say she must've been apart of a rebellious small village before becoming a victor. But the capital loved her anyways. She was their little siren, their little mermaid.

Both he and she won their games at 14.

As they grew into mature teenagers they started to lean on each other more. They taught each other different things and grew to be wonderful friends.

And this, is how strangers became inseparable.
