Sorry for not updating in a month! I was taking a break and trying to relax, especially with exams coming up. Well, enjoy this chapter!
A slow, steady beat filled my ears once I gained consciousness. Then I heard voices by my bedside, whispering frantically. Who are they?
"...But that's not fair! You chose me over her! You can't just switch it up now!"
"I can and I am. Good-bye!"
"You can't do this, Luke! You just can't--"
"And you can't do this by my daughter's bedside. Out, both of you!"
I recognized that voice! How could I not remember my dad? But why was Luke here? We're broke up, and I found somebody better. Oh God, Nicki! Is she okay? Where is she?
That's when I used all my force to open my eyes. I got one eye opened and closed it. The hospital rooms are so bright. But I can't give up. I need to know if Nicki's okay. I won't rest until I know.
A few minutes passed before I opened my eyes, and I saw the white ceiling above me. Finally.
"Jessica?" My dad questioned from same distance away. I heard footsteps crime closer, and my parents were smiling over me.
"Dad?" I tried, but it came out as a groan. My throat was extremely dry. I need water.
"How are you feeling? Are you okay?"
"Jessie, you scared us! I thought you would never wake up!"
"Are you in pain? Do you need the nurse, darling?"
"Of course she needs the nurse! She's been in a car accident! Honey, go get someone!"
My mom stayed by my side, holding my hand and stroking the hair out of my face. I desperately tried to ask where was Nicki, but all that came out were grunts and groans.
A few nurses rushed in and began to check me over. I felt fine, except for my leg and my head. But I didn't care about then at the moment. I needed to know where my girlfriend was.
"Water," I whispered to my mother.
"Hold on, baby. I have some in my bag."
She left momentarily, but soon came back with a bottle of water in hand. Then she helped me down the whole bottle. Once I felt my throat moist, I asked the question I repeated a thousand times.
"Where's my girlfriend?"
My parents exchanged looks of surprise. "So she was your girlfriend?" Mom asked.
"Of course! Who else would she be? And where is she?"
"Honey, she's fine. She's in the--"
"What room? I have to go see her now!"
I sat up and tried to move my legs off the bed, but the nurses shouted and pushed me back on the bed.
"You can't go anywhere," one of them said.
"Yes I can. That's my girlfriend."
"No, I mean you really can't go anywhere. Your right leg is broken. And you may have head trauma. We need you to stay in bed."
"But, I've got to go see her--"
"Maybe when she feels better she can come visit you. But not now. You two need rest. Especially since you've been out for two weeks."
Two weeks? I thought it was a few hours, a day at the most. But two whole weeks?
"Mom, you have to go check on her," I said. "Tell her who you are so she won't be scared. I need to know if she's truly okay."
Once Dad was by my side, I held his hand. I screwed up big time now. If Nicki truly is hurt and the nurses are lying, I'll never forgive myself.
The nurses cleared out, and the room door opened. I sat up, thinking it was Mom coming back, but scowled when I saw Luke.
"What do you want?" I growled.
He gave me a small smile, which I didn't return. He had no reason to be here. "I heard what happened and came straight away. I'm so glad you're okay."
"Whatever. You can go back to your girlfriend now. You're not needed."
"Jess," Dad said lowly, "he hasn't left your bedside."
"What?" Why? Did he still care for me? Maybe even love me? He left me for her, then left her for me. Make up your mind!
"Nobody asked you to stay," I snapped at Luke.
"But I felt like I had to. Jessie...I still love you."
Everything stilled as silence hung in the air. It was hard to forget about your ex. Especially when you had lots of feelings for him, and you fell for him so hard. But they're called your ex for a reason. You're supposed to have moved on, but have a little feelings for them.
If I said I didn't love him, I would be a liar. But I have Nicki now. I don't need him.
"You better leave before Nicki sees you," I told him with a shaky voice.
But Luke didn't leave. He did the opposite. He walked towards me, making my father get out the way. He took my hand in both of his and gazed into my eyes.
"Tell me you don't love me anymore. I know when you're lying, Jess. So don't even try."
I looked away. "Please just leave."
His hands disappeared from mine and I heard him and my dad say good-bye to each other. It wasn't until I felt something wet drop on my hand that I realized I was crying. I tried wiping them away, but they keep coming back.
Why did Luke make this so hard? I had some feelings for him, and he knew it. He already messed up my current relationship once. He's trying to do it again.
I started to sob, and that's when I felt arms go around my neck. I fell into the familiar embrace and hid my face in her neck. I sobbed even harder because I missed her and I knew she wouldn't talk to me after I told her what happened.
"It's okay, baby. I'm here. Everything will be okay."
No it won't. If I knew Luke, he would come back everyday until I was out. And I know Nicki will not put up with it.
