Taking Control of my Life

I fall asleep but sometime in the afternoon, we arrive. I am awake as I feel the car being put in park and car doors opening. Slowly, I open my eyes so as to not shock with with a sudden inward flow of bright sunlight. Soon enough, my house comes into view. There are lots of cars along the road where our house is, and I remember that they're my friend's cars. We all met at my house in the beginning of the summer, and got into the van to drive to Harvey's.

When reality hits me, I dash out of the car, dropping my phone from my lap, and run to the house. The front door opens just before I reach it, and Petra runs out. She meets me and we crash rather gracefully into each other.

"Oh, my God. I need to hear about everything!" She exclaims as we squeeze each other and rock back and forth. She is warm and her hair smells like home. I know she's been using my hair products. I'll yell at her later.

"I called a lot when we were there. You practically know everything already."

She places end arms on my shoulders and stretched her arms out so she can see me.

"Are you kidding me? I want to know everything." She leans in closer. Lowering her voice, she says, "And tell me about Jamaal. How the hell did you land a 23 year old?"

"I'm fuckin' amazing!" I say sarcastically.

"Wow, Petra. I love when you acknowledge my presence and care enough about me to come say hi!" Kendra crosses her arms behind me.

"Aw, hi, Kendra!" Petra squeals like the child she is and throws her arm around Kendra. Then Caressa.

I look toward the door and see dad coming out. A huge grin spreads across my face and I dash to hug him.

     "Hi, daddy."

He squeezes me tight and I feel so secure and at home. I realize just how much I've missed everyone, even though I swore I wouldn't.

"Wow, look at you." He grins, pinching my cheek gently. "You got darker-" He gasps, noticing my boob tattoo for the first time. I sent pictures, but he's never seen it in real life since I got it. Duh. The tattoo isn't too far down my boob, though I worry my parents will overreact and think it's an issue. The words are at the top. You can partially see it if I wear a low cut top or a tank top. Right now, I have on a tank top, so you can see a part of the calligraphed sentence.

"C'est la vie," my dad reads, a small smile on his face. It's small, o me a barely there. But I see it.

     I squeeze his shoulder playfully.

"Yup." I grin. "Hey, where's mom?"

"Mom is at a friend's child's communion. There's an after party as there always is with us Africans, and it's gonna be late, you know, but she'll come back to see you."

"Phew!" I place my hand on my chest in mock relief. "I was gonna say!"

"Yeah, alright." He smiles. I move to aside so Six, Erick, Caressa, and Kendra can join our chat circle. "How was the trip, guys, come on." Dad throws his arms up. "I mean, the car looks fine from here..." He moves his torso to get better looks at the van. "So the real question is how was it? The vacation? And you all are goin' to college this fall, wow. You grow up so damn fast-"

"Okay, okay, dad." I put my hands up to stop him. "We just got back, our stuff is still in the car. I'm hella tired..." And I already miss Jamaal.

"Right, alright." He moves to the opens trunk of the van. "Six, Erick. Help me get this stuff out."

"Hey, I can so that too." Kendra protests.
