Chapter XVI
TARA
"What?"
Cancer? How is that possible? It was like my mind couldn't fully process it. I repeated the word over and over again in my head, Cancer?
"I just found out, two weeks ago. It's stage three, and they aren't really sure what the out come is going to be."
" Two weeks? You found out two weeks ago, and you tell me now?" I ask in a whisper.
I could already feel the tears spilling over. Two weeks ago he had confessed his love for me, and did he not think that was a good time to say something about it?
"I didn't know how to tell you Tara. Please don't cry sweetheart, I'm so sorry I didn't tell you, I've had trouble excepting it myself. I just wanted the time had with you to be normal, not full of sadness; And just now, I didn't want you to find out after and be angry with me or something."
Asher reached for me as if he needed to hold onto something, but a certain kind of numbness was overtaking me.
"How long? How long did they say?"
His hand dropped and he sighed, "six months of I'm lucky."
I broke down right there, sobbing uncontrollably. That was to soon, I just got him and now I'm losing him?
Asher grabbed me into his arms, hugging me tightly to his body as I fought back. Eventually my fighting ceased and all that was left was my shaking, sniffling frame. It was like my heart was bursting, collapsing from the inside, and it hurt.
"Ash- you can't-" I couldn't finish out the childish statement that almost left my lips.
What, he couldn't die? It wasn't like he was controlling his fate.
"I know I'm so sorry Tara, if I had known... If I would have known of it before I wouldn't have attached myself to you as I have. I don't want to leave you like this."
I sobbed harder as he spoke,"Don't leave.."
It was a selfish statement, and very childish but I couldn't help it. He was there for me when many people weren't, he was like my knight in shining armor, coming to my rescue with cribs, and donuts.
"What am I supposed to do without you?" I ask holding onto him tighter.
"You'll make it, your strong. That's what I love about you." Asher says stroking my hair, and kissing my forehead.
"You knew yet you still worried about us?"
"I wanted you and little man to be okay when I'm gone, so I ensured it myself." He said smiling at me sadly.
Sadly I buried my face into his chest, savoring the smell of his cologne, as he hugged me closer to him.
I'm not exactly sure what he meant by ensuring we were okay, but whatever it was, I trusted him.
"Can't they do anything to help?" I asked.
"They said if they had caught it earlier, yes, but they didn't catch it in time. It's to far along for the chemo to even do anything."
I had to but into my lip, hard, to keep from breaking into tears again. This had to be the hardest thing I've ever faced, but then again I knew it was harder for him.
ASHER
It was hard having to see her like this. Knowing I was the reason for her pain, but then again she had to know.. Well at least what I wanted her to know. Before I had met her, I was lonely, a sad lonely vampire would had watched everyone he had loved die. For four hundred years I had walked this earth. I have outlived my Mother and Father, my brother and my three sisters, every one of my friends and my first love Agatha.
