Youngjae’s POV:
“Not another word Yoo Youngjae, do you understand?”
I jolted awake covered in sweat, like any usual morning. I took a couple minutes to calm down and then glanced at the clock. My eyes widen as I realized I only had thirty minutes to get work. I scrambled out of bed and ran to the bathroom to wash my face, brush my teeth, and give my hair a once through with the comb. I came back out and threw on my uniform, before making my way to the kitchen. I grabbed an apple and ran out of my apartment, forgetting to lock the door.
I finished the apple just as I walked through the entrance. I threw the core away and made my way to the office. I stood outside for a few minutes to catch my breath, before knocking on the door. I heard a muffled, “come in,” so I did so.
“Oh hello Youngjae. I see that you are five minutes late.” Himchan glanced over at the clock and sighed. “Let’s not let that happen again, arraso?” I nodded and smiled. I was about to write an apology when I realized the thin board wasn’t around my neck. I widen my eyes and glanced at my manager, who was looking down at some papers with a frustrated look. I walked over to him and tapped his shoulder. “What is it Youngjae; can’t you see that I am a bit busy?”
I bit my lip and bowed my head. I took a couple steps back and then turned to walk away. I left the room and went to clock on. I’d just have to get through today without it.

The day without my board or voice was misery. I tried so hard to help all the people I could, but I just ended up getting worked up and frustrated. One of my co-workers Jongup, a teenager who was in his third year of high school, saw I was having a few issues, so he put me on a register and had me check items out for people. It was a bit better, since all I had to do was scan the items and point to the price that was on display above my register. An hour before the end of my shift, Himchan finally stepped out and looked at me in confusion.
“Why are you at the register, Youngjae?” He questioned. I blinked at him, before gesturing towards my chest. “Where is your board?” I bit my lip and pointed towards the doors, trying to indicate my apartment. Himchan caught on to what I was saying and simply nodded. “Jongup, can you take over the register, while I talk to Youngjae for a little.” Himchan yelled over at the teenager before grabbing my hand and walking to his office.
“Youngjae, I’m sorry about your vocal issues, but if you can’t attempt to help our customers more, I’ll have to fire you.” I widen my eyes and shook my head no. I linked my fingers together and got down on my knees, pleading to my friend. “Youngjae, get up. I just don’t want to lose business; you can understand that right?” He helped me up and led me out of the office. I nodded and bit my lip to keep the tears inside.
“Himchan!” We both whipped our head towards Jongup, who was smiling and waving us towards him. I sighed and looked down. Why couldn’t I be as energetic and smiley as Jongup. I felt a hand press against my back to get me to walk, so I complied without looking up.
“Is there something I can help you with?” Himchan asked politely.
“Ne. This gentleman was wondering if we could retrieve some data from this chip from his computer. I’m not sure, so I was wondering if maybe Youngjae could do it. He’s pretty smart.” At the sound of my name, I slowly lifted my head and locked eyes with two beautiful brown orbs, causing a small gasping sound to escape my lips.
