Claustrophobia and a Roommate
After making a few wrong turns I arrived at the boarding school. I sat in the parking lot for about ten minutes, staring at the huge building. My eyes got tired from being wide for so long so I grabbed my stuff, locked the car, and headed inside.
I pushed the door open and my eyes instantly went wide. Let me just tell you- if you are claustrophobic, you would probably immediately die in this situation. The entrance way was flooded with people coming in and out-some adults, but mostly kids that looked about my age.
I shuffled through the crowd to the information desk. After waiting in a twenty-five minute line, I headed upstairs, searching for my room number.
On my way there, about ten people introduced themselves to me, and I think the most I said was "Hi, I'm Jay," to any of them. I wasn't interested in socializing right now. I walked down a hallway on the second floor.
"224...226..." I was getting closer at least. I thought I almost found my room but I stood frozen in the hallway when I heard something strange.
Loud, blaring music was leaking out of a door in the hallway. It sounded like...Kesha? I shook my head, and when I found that my room was the room that had a party going on in it, I let out a sigh. I prepared to find a mob of dancing people in my dorm, but there was only one dancer. A guy was jumping on one of the beds, lip syncing and dancing around. He seemed to be running out of breath just as I came in. He caught sight of me and leaned over to the radio on his nightstand. I didn't realize he was laughing at my horrified expression until after he turned the music off.
His laugh was oddly familiar, and my eyes were glued on him as I closed the door behind me.
I realized who it was, but he beat me to mentioning it. He strode over and we shook hands-well technically, he grabbed mine and shook it-and said "Heeeey, I remember you," with a triumphant smile across his face like he just won the lottery for knowing who I was. But I shook his hand back, so I suppose you could still say we shook hands.
I opened my mouth to speak but he started rambling on about how much fun we were going to have as roommates. Conveniently, his talking continued long enough for me to unpack everything I had, and after his rambling on he apologized for being so excited. He laughed a little bit. I just kinda smiled and said "its okay". What I meant was, I'm used to people out-talking me, but it's okay, because you're somewhat entertaining to listen to.
He nodded, but said he would give me some space, and that he had to check with the front desk about something anyway. After he left, I shook my head and smiled, wondering how one person could have so much energy. This was going to be a long year. But if it was going to be a "long year," why was I smiling?
