Broken

22: Familiar Faces

"Everybody listen up!" Somebody shouts. I don't recognize this person, but judging how she's dressed, she must be a leader. "I have talked to my co-workers, and we've decided that we need to evacuate Brokens first!"
My brain focuses to Tay. She isn't Broken! And judging by the careless reactions on most peoples' faces, most of them are Broken. It'll probably be a long wait.

"Let's just sneak in," I say to Tay.

Tay, Aidan, Grace, Jack, Noah and I get in the shortest line. When Tay is next, I notice that people stand beside the teleportation machines with clipboards. They're checking.

"What's your name?" The man says.
"Taylor," Tay says in a small voice.
"Taylor what?" The man grumbles, annoyed.
"Taylor Robinson," she mutters a bit louder.

The man scans the list twice.

"I'm sorry, Taylor, but you aren't on the list of Brokens. We'll call you when it's your turn,"

Aidan and I follow Tay out of the line. Jack mouths a sentence to us, but I only understand a couple of words; sorry, brother and up there. I frown to see Grace and Noah don't even flinch when we leave.

"What do we do?" I ask Aidan and Tay.
"I say we take a list and add your name to it," Aidan replies. "We can ask Jeff if we can borrow one of the lists and add the names on,"
"The names?" I raise an eyebrow at Aidan.
"Oh... I mean Taylor's name," Aidan says abruptly.

We look around to see if we could spot Jeff, but we can't find him
"Where is that guy?" I say.
"Maybe he-" Aidan is interrupted by a bang.

I turn to see the door smashed open. A dozen men in dark suits stomp into the room shooting others. A couple of people drop dead or injured to the ground. The people with clipboards run inside a tube, too scared to risk their lives. I push Tay and Aidan in the tube before me. Tay gets in first, but nothing happens.

"You can't escape here if you aren't Broken," Aidan sighs. "Like when you came down the cliff,"
"But I came down the cliff and I wasn't broken," Tay says
"Jeff spilt a serum on you before you went down, maybe we can use that!" Aidan's eyes light up.
"We?" I say. This is the second time Aidan has said this, is he hiding something?
"I-" He shakes his head. "I'm not Broken either... I-"
A bullet flies right at the tube. It doesn't go through, but it shatters a section of it.
"Let's go!" I exclaim.

Aidan leads us through the halls. It doesn't take long, but it feels almost like eternity with all the desperate screams of men and women. We enter a room with nothing but a keypad, similar to the one Grace showed me. Aidan types in a password very slowly, as if he's trying to remember it, but I don't pay attention to the numbers. Once he's done, I hear a small clicking noise. The walls fold to reveal a cart. But to my surprise, it's empty.

"What?" Aidan gasps. "Where's the syringes?!"

That's when I hear another click, but this time, it's a bullet going into its chamber. I would recognize that noise anywhere. I turn around to see two men, (or women, I can't really tell) aiming guns at us.

"Shoot!" The voice of a young man is muffled by its mask.
"Why don't you shoot?" The other says.
"Because... It's your turn,"
"What do you mean it's my turn?"
"What, are you scared?"
"Are you?"
"If you're gonna shoot us then shoot us!" I exclaim.

Tay and Aidan raise their eyebrows at me, not wanting me to get us shot. Silence.

"Okay, well if you'll just kindly move-" I push past them slowly.
"Wait, Jordyn-" One of the young men say.
"How do you know my name?!" I say.

He takes off his mask. It's Toby.

|I just had to have one last Toby/Dylan-Jordyn moment before this ends. Oh, and I already started to make a 'book trailer-preview thingy' for my next story I'm excited to write! But that doesn't mean I posting a prequel for this for sure. It depends if I'll have enough time. (...No pun intended) Thanks for reading :)|
