21: The Attack

"Hey Jeff!" I wave him over.
"Yes?" He walks over to me.
"Is it possible to transport some people over another facility or safe house?" I ask.
"How many?"
"Um... Like this whole facility,"

Jeff narrows his eyes at me but doesn't reply.

"Aidan and Grace told me what you heard," I say. "They're plan was just to leave here secretly, so it's not so obvious. But it's not right, and you know it, we can't just leave a bunch of innocents here in this facility, waiting to be attacked without even knowing it."

"So you want me to find a way for everybody here to escape? In how much time?" He asks, only half serious.
"ASAP, but we have like about one or two hours," I say, remembering what Aidan told me.
"Got it, I think I have an idea," Jeff nods.
"Good, spread the word,"
"Never guessed I'd be taking orders from you," Jeff smiles.
"Me neither," I smile back.

"Can I have everyone's attention?" The speakers fill the room with what I recognize as Jeff's voice. "The facility is under evacuation right now. So gather all of your important work and files and meet in the transportation area. Bring your personal belongings, but not all, only your most valuable. This is not a drill, I repeat, this is not a drill."

And then the chaos begins. Men and women run down the halls, frantically holding papers and files. I move to my dorm, pushing through the crowd that gradually gets bigger. I spot Jack, beside him, a smaller boy, around the age of thirteen, holds his arm. Probably his brother. That's when I feel a hand wrap around my own arm.

"That was quick," I recognize as Aidan's voice.
"Well that was the plan, right?" I say.

His hand slides to my back, guiding me to my dorm.

"See you later," he smiles once we reach my dorm.

I shut the door closed right behind me, and lean against it. My eyes fall on Tay before I could scan the room. She kneels on the ground, gathering her stuff and throwing it into her school bag. Her short blonde hair has grown a couple of inches. Have we really been here for that long? We've only been here for like a month.

"Hi," I say, walking towards her.
"Hi..." she doesn't look to see who had spoken.
"So we might finally go back," I start to gather my own belongings. "You know, to our families."
"Yeah, maybe," she purses her lips, almost like she's hiding something.

We pack our stuff silently for another minute. Together we walk out the door and follow the crowd towards the 'transportation area.'

Once we're there, I observe what I don't expect. I thought, that we'd leave by train, but instead, I'm greeted by a couple of small glass tubes. I spot Jack's brother walk into one, then in seconds, he's gone. I can't believe my eyes. Aidan, Grace, Noah and Jack come to my side.

"Teleportation," Aidan says, reading my facial expression. "They're transporting the youngest first,"
"How?" I exclaim.
"Science," Aidan waves his hands around.
"Cool-" I start, still amazed, but interrupted but a loud crash.

An explosion, followed by popping noises and screams. The Unknown have arrived.
