School Dance (Dan's pov)

I walk in with my friends, paying at the door. I follow them into the cafeteria where the dance is held. They gather in a group, pulling me in, and eyeing the prettiest girls here.

I'm not into girls though. I'm gay. A gay boy at a straight school. It's hard, especially when you're in eighth grade.
I see my crush walk in, pushing his black hair back creating a small quiff. I bite my lip. He talks with his girl friends, giggling and jumping around. He wears black skinny jeans, a maroon dotted, I think, button down shirt buttoned up to his chin, and vans.

I bite my lip. He's so hot.
"Dan, it looks like you've got your eye on a girl!" My friend Mason points out.

"Those girls walking with that freak boy Phil are pretty damn hot. Looks like you've picked a nice one," Tommy says after following my eyes.

"Yeah..." I let them walk away and to the girls. I join them but stay in the back.

"Not interested in them?" A voice comes from next to me.

I jump and look to my right.

"Phil!" I set my hand on my heart. He seemed to appear out of nowhere. "I just think... Um.. Well..."

"Nah, mate," Phil pats me in the back. "It's okay. Me neither."

I slump against a wall near me.

Phil follows my lead. I slide down so I'm sitting. Phil does the same. I huff out a breath. Phil copies me.

"Why are you copying me?" I giggle.

"To make you laugh," Phil traces the shape of his knee with his finger. "And i see it worked."

"No," I bite my lip to stop myself. My crush copies me again. Old music booms from the speakers.

"These songs suck ass," Phil frowns.

"True," I peer at the clock.

"Phil, what do you like to do? I just want to get to know you better, I guess."

"I like to play video games, watch anime, play board games, and... Listen to Muse, Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance."

"No way," I turn to face him. "Me too!" Phil meets my eyes and the beauty makes me melt. I stare him down in an unofficial staring contest but finally break eye contact when I find we've been looking at each other for quite a while.

I spark up another conversation, talking about music.

After a while of talking I look up and realize we have been talking for an hour.

I tell Phil.

"Oh my god," He smiles. "Can I ask you something?"

"Yeah," I play with the string of my purple jumper.

"Do you actually like your friends?"

"Honestly, no. That's why I sit outside and read during lunch. I hate them. I just want my parents to think I have friends."

"Oh," Phil thinks for a second. "I'll be your friend."

"Sure!" I grin. "Want to go out to the balcony? It's getting hot in here." (So take off all your clothes)

"Sure," Phil stands up, stretching. He reaches down and grabs my hand to pull me up.

Electricity courses through me when he grasps my hand. Fireworks spark at our touch. He doesn't feel it or see them.

We stay like that for an awkwardly long time, our hands clasped together. Finally I let him pull me up. We slink out to the balcony and sit down at a lunch table. I look out into the woods behind the school. It's so dark at night and weird to look at.

A slow song starts to play. I eye Phil, and no conversation is between us. We are alone out here so we would be able to talk louder. But we don't.

"Dan, do you want to dance?" Phil asks.

"Yes!" I say a little too quickly. I clear my throat and reach for his shoulders. He automatically grabs my waist. We sway away to the song.

"Do you know if anyone can see us out here?" Phil asks nervously.

"They can't," I say in a matter-of-fact way.

Phil smiles shyly. "I've liked you for a while."

"I've liked you for a while, too," I inch closer to him. Phil inches closer to me. We do this until our foreheads touch.

He kisses me, and I kiss him back. When we come back, I wrap my arms tighter around him and rest my head on his shoulder.

"Dan," Phil is also resting his head on my shoulder. "Will you go out with me sometime and maybe be my secret boyfriend?"

"Yes."
